Hi jay,

Here’s what's been happening around ARC. If you have any questions, please let us know!

*Darfur Violence*

Violence in Darfur, Sudan has escalated quickly. More than 300,000 people have been displaced by fighting since January. ARC staff members are among those who’ve fled.

A couple of weeks ago, 37 of our staff members – local Sudanese who work in ARC medical clinics – were forced to flee their homes due to violence. Some of their homes were burned, some lost all their possessions. A few of our staff were assaulted and are now recovering. As you can imagine, they are still terrified. And since then, violence has escalated even further – we’ve been forced to evacuate a large number of staff from Darfur entirely. Other aid agencies have also evacuated, and I’m sorry to report that two aid workers from World Vision have been killed.

All this when civilians in Darfur need help more than ever. People have lost everything and desperately need basics like medical care, clean water and shelter. The few ARC staff who remain in Darfur are doing what they can to help.

*Matching Challenge for Darfur*

Just a few minutes ago, Mary Tjosvold - former ARC Board Chair - stepped forward for our staff in Darfur. Mary heard what happened, and she wanted to do something. She and her mother Margaret Tjosvold will match all donations made for our Darfur team, up to $10,000!

If you'd like to step forward and answer Mary and Margaret's challenge, call us at (612) 872-7060. Your donation will be doubled to help our staff in Darfur recover.

*Presidential Advice*

In June, ARC’s Said Sheik-Abdi was invited to the White House to take part in meetings to provide advice and consultation prior to President Obama’s trip to Africa. Said is program manager for ARC’s I AM A STAR for Somalia program. He and 30 other members of the African diaspora advised on issues related to trade, development, democracy, education and more. The President and First Lady returned from Africa last week after visits to Senegal, South Africa and Tanzania.
