+ We Need Your Vote +

Please VOTE! Help ARC's Asili project win $25,000 from the Aspen Ideas Award! Asili is a business startup based in Congo and co-created by ARC and its partners. Asili’s integrated ‘strip mall’ puts three social enterprises – a clean water business, a health clinic and an agriculture co-op – together on one platform, allowing families in DRC to move from problem to solution. We’re excited for the opportunity to publically recognize its potential to create lasting impact. Finalists will get a chance to pitch their ideas to a live panel of judges at the Aspen Ideas Festival this June, vying for a chance at the top prize. To help Asili make it to this final round, we need your votes by June 1st. To vote:

1) Go to this link: http://bit.ly/1EDJ6sP (You should find Asili at the top of the list).

2) Click on the triangle next to the description of Asili.

3) You'll be prompted to log-in with Facebook, Twitter, Google, LinkedIn or Yahoo. After logging-in, you'll be returned to the page with Asili at the top. Click the triangle again, and you should see your vote counted. Thanks for your support!

+ UPDATE: Burundian Refugees +

ARC's Rwanda team continues to do amazing work responding to the Burundian refugee crisis. They’ve been busy building up Mahama Camp, providing refugees with desperately needed health care and nutritional support. In just a few short weeks, the team has gotten this camp up and running and serving thousands of families. Just a bare patch of ground a month ago, Mahama Camp is now sheltering more than 20,000 people! See how the camp is shaping up...

+ And The Winner Is... +

Yasir Ilyas, ARC’s Senior Monitoring and Evaluation Officer in Pakistan, has won ARC’s staff photo contest for the second year running! His photo raises awareness about the adverse psychosocial impact of corporal punishment on primary school students in Pakistan. This year, 4 of the top 5 contest photos were taken by ARC’s Pakistan team. In an act of good sportsmanship and solidarity with their worldwide colleagues, Yasir and the Pakistan team have unanimously decided to dedicate both the honor and prize (a new camera!) to their dear colleague in Rwanda and other Top 5-finisher, Betty Umugiraneza. Congratulations to all our staff for the amazing photos they’ve taken! You can see them all right here: https://www.facebook.com/media/set/?set=a.10152907482372462.1073741847.18213037461&type=3

+ Burundian Refugees Arrive in Rwanda +

With political uncertainty tied to the upcoming June elections, more than 40,0000 Burundians have fled their homeland for safe haven in Rwanda, Tanzania and DRC (see BBC article on the situation in Burundi: http://www.bbc.com/news/business-32618391).

ARC’s Rwanda team has been working tirelessly to build a refugee camp to offer shelter to the nearly 20,000 Burundians who have arrived in Rwanda seeking stability and safety. Mahama Camp is located in eastern Rwanda on land allocated by the Rwandan government. Working alongside Rwandans from the local community, the ARC team has focused on putting up family tent shelters, community kitchens and other structures to shelter and provide for those in the camp. Our health team is on the ground in Mahama Camp providing health care to the families arriving. A few days ago, our team helped to safely deliver the first baby born at Mahama –little Miss Iradukunda Diella (below). Stay tuned for more updates on this developing crisis.

+ VIDEO: Women's Day Marathon +

We recently shared that the ARC Uganda team at Nakivale Refugee Settlement held a race on International Women’s Day to promote the safety of women and girls. In this video, you’ll see video of the race and hear Harriet (Protection Manager for ARC at Nakivale) talk about what it was like to organize the 12 kilometer 'marathon' for refugees who ran to support women in their community: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=DXHdFAN2qrA
