UPDATE: Pakistan Flooding

Dear jay,

800 people have been killed, and 1 million more affected by devastating floods in Pakistan.

Heavy rains in the last two days have caused severe flooding in Pakistan's Northwest Frontier Province. Most of the homes in this region are made of mud, so when the flood waters came through they completely devastated entire communities.

Our Emergency Response team is on the ground there now. They'll begin work as soon as the flooding has subsided - providing clean water and mobile health clinics for survivors.

We received this message this morning from our Emergency Response Team Leader:

Dear All,

Flooding has been terrible. Swat, Nowshera, Mardan, and Peshawar seem hardest hit. The roads in and out of all those places are washed out, bridges gone, internet and telephone has just starting functioning today.

Information is sketchy. Some NGOs are trapped inside of affected areas with little supplies or trapped outside with no ways to get aid in.

The Govt has helicopters in the air but so far no camps have been set up. The fear is that this is just the beginning - more rains forecast and we are just at the tip of monsoon season. There seems to be a collective holding of breath to see what happens next.

We have mobile health teams assembled and ready to go.  They are coordinating with partners and authorities and will head out soon. Authorities are also requesting medicines. We've put together our entire stock of medicines and hygiene kits and given them to the World Health Organization.

With most water sources fouled by the flooding, our water and sanitation teams are preparing to get in and get people clean water just as soon as the area becomes accessible. Contaminated water could lead to outbreaks of diarrheal disease, cholera and worse.

Thankfully, we're well positioned and prepared to help survivors.

Thanks and I will keep you posted.

- Jill
