Help Us Start 2014 Strong?

Hello jay,

This year was devastating for many families around the world.

Millions of Syrians fled their communities for safety, and Filipino families lost their homes to Typhoon Haiyan. ARC has been there in Jordan and the Philippines to help people recover from these disasters. And we’ve continued our critical work with families in Sudan, South Sudan, Uganda, Rwanda, Somalia, Pakistan and Thailand.

Will you help us get off on the right foot in 2014? We have ambitious goals for the new year. We’re opening a new program in Myanmar to help communities struggling with drug-resistant malaria. We’re also launching an innovative social enterprise model in Congo with the goal of drastically reducing child mortality – DRC suffers some of the highest rates of death in children under 5 years old.

And – as always – we’ll be ready to respond for families in the event of a new humanitarian emergency in 2014.

To do all this, we need you by our side. Will you make a donation and support these efforts: http://www.arcrelief.org/donate

Thank you so much for your support,

-Daniel

P.S. If you’ve already sent in a donation, please accept my sincere thanks.

3 Days Left - Halfway To The Goal

Hi jay-

We have 3 days left to raise $17,805! 3 former ARC board members issued a challenge - they would match gifts up to $35,000, until Sunday, December 22. We're about halfway to that goal. Will you help us chip away at the rest?

Thank you so much if you've already sent in a donation in the last few days. If not and you are still planning to give this year, you can give right now at: http://www.arcrelief.org/DecMatch .

ARC supporters have helped more than 3 million people this year. You've been there for devastated families in Syria and the Philippines. And you've been there for people in Congo and Sudan who are beginning the process of rebuilding their lives. With your support, we'll reach out to even more families and young people in Myanmar and Somalia in 2014.

A matched gift makes a big difference for all these people…whether it means helping twice as many families or helping a single family twice as much.  Whatever the amount of your gift, the impact of your donation will be felt double.

Thank you so much for your generosity and your partnership. I wish you and your family a wonderful holiday season.

Sincerely,

-Daniel

Daniel Wordsworth
President, American Refugee Committee

P.S. Right now, gifts can go twice as far – but only on donations made online or postmarked by Dec. 22.

5 Days Left!

Hi jay-

We have 5 days left to reach a $35,000 challenge issued by 3 former ARC board members. Will you help us get there? If you've already sent in a donation, please accept my deepest gratitude. If not, you can give right now at: http://www.arcrelief.org/DecMatch .

Three individuals have issued a challenge for ARC donors: give now, and they’ll match your gift, up to $35,000. But only until December 22nd!

It's been a hard year. Millions of families in Syria and the Philippines have been forced from their homes, and people in Congo and Sudan have continued suffering the devastation of war. But this year has also seen new hope. People in Somalia have begun rebuilding their lives and their country, and reform in Myanmar has families looking ahead to a brighter future.

A matched gift makes a big difference for all these people…whether it means helping twice as many families – or helping a single family twice as much.  Whatever the amount of your gift, $15 or $1500, the impact of your donation will be felt double.

It’s not just your financial support I’m talking about. Imagine a person who has lost everything – their home, their family and friends, their belongings. It feels incredibly lonely. When you step forward, you show them someone out there still cares. With your financial and moral support, they can rebuild their lives and face the future with hope.

22: http://www.arcrelief.org/decmatch .

Inside ARC - 12.12.13 - Typhoon, Match, Myanmar

Hi jay,

Here's an update from ARC. Let us know if you have any questions.

-Daniel

Daniel Wordsworth, President

***********************************************

*Double Your Impact!*

Three former ARC board members have issued a matching challenge – They will match all donations  made by December 22, up to $35,000! A gift of $50 will become $100, $250 becomes $500. That’s twice as many people – in the Philippines, Congo, Myanmar and elsewhere – who can stay healthy, access shelter and have safe water to drink.

If you’ve already made a gift this year, will you let a friend know about the challenge? If you haven’t given yet, this is the best time to give! Donate now here: www.arcrelief.org/Decmatch

*ARC in Myanmar*

ARC has now opened a program in Myanmar! Beginning in early 2014, we will be working to address drug-resistant malaria in Mon and Kayin States and Tanintharyi region in Southeast Myanmar. Our team will be collaborating closely with ethnic Karen and Mon health organizations and the Myanmar Ministry of Health. We’ll be diagnosing malaria and providing treatment to more than 165,000 people in 199 villages and 14 high-traffic border crossings. We’ll also provide insecticide treated mosquito nets to help prevent future infection.

Since 1992, ARC has been working closely with people from Myanmar who have fled to Thailand, specifically Karen refugees living in northern Thailand and economic migrants in southern Thailand. We’re excited to continue our work with Myanmarese families, now inside of Myanmar itself.

*Philippines Update*

ARC continues to assist survivors of Typhoon Haiyan. Our emergency response team reports that the devastation is massive—with 15 to 50 feet of debris piled up in some areas—and new estimates indicate that the storm affected more than 15 million people.  Our team has distributed relief items such as tarps, ropes, mats, mosquito nets, and hygiene kits to 276 families in a village 30 miles south of Tacloban called Rawis.  Shelter is a critical need there, as up to 80 percent of houses had been devastated by the storm.  The ARC team is also helping in neighborhoods in Tacloban. They are focusing on cash-for-work programs, which send teams of residents out with wheelbarrows, shovels, and saws to remove debris.  They are also assisting with removing fallen coconut trees and preparing the fallen timber for milling.  The challenge moving forward is to help people “build back better” so their houses are able to withstand future typhoons.  The team has assisted some 5000 people so far.  Team Leader Graham Eastmond reports, “while there is enormous devastation in the Philippines, it is far from a hopeless case.  The communities are resilient—and are recovering as quickly as they can. They are doing a lot themselves. I witnessed a lot of graciousness and hope.”

Your Gift Matched on #GivingTuesday!

Hello jay,

Today is Giving Tuesday in the United States - it's a day we at the American Refugee Committee celebrate the humanitarian spirit and generosity of all Americans. Without the support of so many generous Americans, we couldn't do what we do for refugees. Thank you so much!

This year, a few very generous former ARC board members are giving us - AND YOU - another reason to celebrate. They will match your donation 100%, up to $35,000 when you give today (#GivingTuesday). Will you rise to their challenge and make a gift today: www.ARCrelief.org/givingtuesday ?

As you know, your support helps ARC respond to the urgent needs of families struggling around the world. Whether it's survivors of Typhoon Haiyan in the Philippines or mothers struggling to save their kids from malnutrition in Congo, your support saves lives and change lives.

If you give today, your gift of $10 will become $20, $50 becomes $100...and so on. You'll make double the impact with your support.

Happy Giving Tuesday!

Best,

-Daniel

Daniel Wordsworth
President, American Refugee Committee

P.S. Will you help us celebrate Giving Tuesday and have your gift matched 100%? Give now at: www.arcrelief.org/givingtuesday .

2.5 Weeks Out

Dear jay,

It’s now been 2.5 weeks since Typhoon Haiyan hit the Philippines causing extreme devastation and tragic loss of life. Stories have begun emerging from the disaster zone – tragic stories and stories of heroism. Families are working to cope with the trauma and brace for the long process of rebuilding.

I need your help to help them. If you’ve already given to ARC or another organization providing relief, thank you! If you haven’t given yet, please consider a contribution for families in the Philippines by supporting our relief efforts.

Our team has been busy on the ground in Tacloban since a few days after the disaster. They’ve focused their efforts outside the city in a place called Dulag. They’re providing lifesaving support to thousands of people. They’ve distributed emergency food rations and hygiene kits. They’re providing support and medical supplies to a group of local doctors operating a mobile clinic.

The team is already working to help people begin recovering. We’ve distributed emergency shelter kits and provided tools, nails and other materials to help families put up solid shelters. We’re also working to clear roads and have built a temporary bridge in order to allow farmers and merchants to access local markets to sell their goods and support themselves.

We’ve seen this before. The process of recovery is long. And families affected by Typhoon Haiyan will continue to need help long after the cameras and the media have moved on.

It’s so important that we have you on-board. Will you make a donation now to provide lifesaving aid and help survivors get started with recovery? A gift of $20, $50 or $100 – anything you can manage – will save lives.

Thank you so much for your continued support.

Sincerely,

-Daniel

Daniel Wordsworth
President, American Refugee Committee

P.S. You can trust us to put your money to good work. ARC has a long history of responding to disasters like this. And we receive 4-stars from Charity Navigator and an ‘A+’ rating from CharityWatch.

Inside ARC - 11.20.13 - Typhoon Response Report

Hi jay,

Our team has been on the ground in the Philippines in Tacloban and surrounding areas (Dulag, etc.) for a number of days. They report that needs are still very great and recovery will be a long process.

Below is the situation report from the team. And here are some photos we received this afternoon from the team: http://www.flickr.com/photos/archq/sets/72157637880997423/ . Let us know if you have any questions.

-Daniel

Daniel Wordsworth, President

***********************************************

*SITUATION REPORT - Typhoon Relief*

I. SIGNIFICANT EVENTS

  • 4.4 million people are displaced from their homes. 13 million affected by the disaster.
  • In Tacloban, services are beginning to come on-line though power remains out across the city.  Humanitarian assistance is ramping up considerably with a large influx of UN, INGOs and volunteers.
  • There are numerous distribution of relief items being carried out in Tacloban. Small quantities of food (2-3 days per person) are also being distributed, though it's still not enough.

II. SECURITY

  • There are continuing reports of looting in affected areas. The ARC team is adhering to the 8pm – 5am curfew

III. OPERATIONS

  • ARC is supporting a local group of doctor carrying out mobile clinics across the towns south of Tacloban with medical supplies flown in from Manila.
  • ARC has distributed emergency shelter kit (tarp, rope and mats) to several hundred people in Barangay Rawis, targeting the most vulnerable families in that area.
  •  ARC is actively working with Global Disaster Immediate Response Team to identify and commence recovery operations of deceased victims of Typhoon Haiyan in a dignified manner that also protects the health of surviving residents.
  • ARC is based out of RTR hospital, a large private facility in central Tacloban city which has emerged as the most viable medical facility in the disaster zone.
  • The ARC team will assess the level of funding available prior to committing to additional programs.

IV. LOGISTICS

  • The ARC team has combined forces with DIRT and set up a base/staging post at RTR hospital.  The hospital, although severely damaged in the storm provides a controlled area and cover for tents.
  • Logistics / transportation remain the greatest constraint for delivering aid with limited amounts of trucks available and fuel prices still 5 times the normal price.
  • Roads are opening down through the main arteries south of Tacloban.

"Not Tomorrow"

“Come here now – not tomorrow, now.”
- Philippines President Benigno Aquino

Dear jay,

On Friday, a super typhoon – some say the worst storm ever to hit land – barreled into the Philippines. Reports of the damage Typhoon Haiyan left behind are devastating. People stranded in trees, lifted there by the storm surge. Others buried alive under the rubble of collapsed buildings.

I need your help. If you can, please make an emergency contribution and support our relief efforts for families in the Philippines.

It’s like deja vu. Witness accounts sound just like what we all heard after the 2004 Indian Ocean Tsunami. Seawater rushing into the streets. The water reaching 15 feet or higher in a matter of minutes. Some people were able to brace themselves, holding on to a building or tree. Others were not.

People have nowhere to turn for help. They don’t know what to do. They have no water, no shelter.

Our team is en route to the area. The first thing they’ll do when they hit the ground is begin distributing relief items to families with things like water jugs, cooking sets, blankets and shelter kits. Meanwhile, they’ll assess survivors’ other critical needs and devise a plan for providing lifesaving water, shelter and food. Our team will focus its efforts in rural areas.

It’s so important that we have you on-board. Will you make a donation now to provide lifesaving aid for survivors? A gift of $20, $50 or $100 – anything you can manage – will save lives.

Thank you so much for your continued support. And please stay tuned for more relief updates from ARC.

Sincerely,

-Daniel

Philippines Tragedy

Dear ARC Friends -

On Friday, Super Typhoon Haiyan slammed into Philippines with heavy winds and flooding rains. At least 1,200 people have been reported killed and nearly 1 million people were forced to evacuate their homes ahead of the storm. It’s too soon to understand the full extent of the disaster, but damage is extensive.

Our hearts go out to families who've lost loved ones and their homes and belongings in this terrible storm.

ARC is on alert. We are closely monitoring the situation in Philippines as it evolves. We are also preparing to deploy a relief team to the area.

Here's a New York Times article posted about one hour ago on the storm and its aftermath: http://www.nytimes.com/2013/11/10/world/asia/philippines-typhoon.html?ref=asia&_r=0

Please stay tuned for more information on this tragedy and our response.

Sincerely,

Inside ARC - 10.30.13 - Top Ten (continued), Annual

Hi jay,

Here's an update from ARC. Let us know if you have any questions.

-Daniel

Daniel Wordsworth, President

***********************************************

* Top Ten: Changemaker's Award (continued)*

Last time, we shared some of the ideas from our Top Ten finalists in ARC’s CHANGEMAKERS idea competition. Again, the question we asked our worldwide staff: If you could do one simple thing, how would you make the ARC experience better for the people we serve? Below are three more ideas that advanced to the Top Ten:

Idea #27 came from Rwanda: Plant Cassava Leaf trees at each household in Gihembe refugee camp in Rwanda. Many refugees in the camp are anemic because the rations they receive from the United Nations are composed primarily of beans and maize. Cassava leaves are very high in iron and an ingredient common in Congolese cooking. In addition to addressing the problem of anemia, the trees would help with soil retention and provide shade in the camp.

Idea #24 came from Minneapolis: Introduce a bicycle-sharing system in refugee settlements. With access to a bike, refugees wouldn’t need to spend hours traveling by foot to school, to get water, to the clinic or to the market. Creating a bicycle cooperative would also increase employment in camps, as refugees themselves would be responsible for the assembly and maintenance of the bicycles.

Idea #57 came from Thailand: Create ARC’s own ‘TED’ Talks. Inspired by the global TED idea sharing platform, ARC TED would create a leadership forum to tackle ideas around ‘t’ransformation, ‘e’ngagement, and ‘d’ignity for peace. Small groups would discuss ideas posed by TED talks and other web content, focusing on peaceful change leaders and concepts. Leading with understanding and experience, we’ll inspire timeless leadership values.

Inside ARC - 10.16.13 - Bamboo, Heroes, Top Ten

Hi jay,

Here's my quick update of the last few weeks at ARC. Let us know if you have any questions.

-Daniel

Daniel Wordsworth, President

***********************************************

* Bamboo at Kiziba *

Congolese refugees living at Kiziba Refugee Camp in Rwanda have begun cultivating bamboo. Why? Kiziba sits on a hillside with very few trees. The threat of erosion and even landslides is very real. Camp residents are taking environmental protection in the camp very seriously. They’ve already planted 172 bamboo stalks and will plant 500 more in the coming days. Bamboo grows incredibly quickly and its roots can reduce soil erosion by up to 75%! In addition to its environmental benefits, camp residents hope the quick growing plant will provide a source of sustainable livelihood for furniture makers and artisans in the camps.

* ARC's Heroes *

October is a month that we pause to recognize all our amazing ARC humanitarian workers doing heroic stuff in the field. Anyone can be a hero. Each of us every day has the opportunity to be a hero – it’s in moments when another person is in need and struggling that heroes emerge. Our heroes in the field just happen to be confronted by more of these moments each day than you or I might be. In places like, Somalia, South Sudan, Pakistan and Thailand, they regularly put aside their needs or wants – or even their safety – to help someone else.

Will you join us in thanking them for what they do? Just take a quick moment and reply to this email with a message for our aid workers in the field letting them know you appreciate what they do. We’ll share your message with our team overseas in our global staff email update.

* Top Ten: Changemaker's Award *

In the last couple of email updates, we let you know about our new CHANGEMAKERS idea competition for our staff around the world. The question we asked everyone: If you could do one simple thing, how would you make the ARC experience better for the people we serve? The response was incredible - we received more than 100 exciting ideas! We’ve now narrowed the list to the top ten submissions. We’ll share a few of those ideas with you today and a few in the coming weeks.

Idea #58 came from South Sudan: Plant Moringa and Neem trees nearby 25 health facilities in Kapoeta district. The trees leaves are more nutritious than oranges or other fruits and could help reduce malnutrition rates in kids under 5 years old.

Idea # 43 came from Thailand: Promote and encourage populations to do exercises like aerobics, to promote improved health in refugee camps.

Idea # 85 came from Uganda: Institute a six-week catering and cooking training course in refugee settlements. Upon completing the program, participants could open restaurants or use their new school to gain employment in future.

Inside ARC - 10.2.13 - CGI, Changemakers, A+

Hi jay,

There's a lot happening at ARC these days. Here's a quick recap of the last few weeks. Let us know if you have any questions.

-Daniel

Daniel Wordsworth, President

***********************************************

* ARC at Clinton Global Initiative *

Last week, ARC participated in the 2013 Clinton Global Initiative (CGI) Annual Meeting in New York. At the meeting, I announced ARC’s Commitment to Action to decrease child mortality in Eastern Congo – to help kids survive to age 5. You can read the full Commitment here:  http://get.cgilink.org/v/c/830093. Right now, 1 in 5 children in DRC doesn’t survive to age 5. We need a new approach NOW to help Congolese kids!

While at the meeting, ARC presented to social entrepreneurs, NGOs, foundations, and potential corporate partners. Our first social enterprise zone is slated to open in eastern Congo in March of 2014. Stay tuned for more details.

* The Changemaker's Award *

A couple of weeks ago, I told you about an ideas competition we launched for ARC staff worldwide. Yesterday was the last day of the competition. In total, nearly 100 ideas were submitted to answer the question: If you could do one simple thing, how would you make the ARC experience better for the people we serve? Ideas have ranged from environmental protection efforts to using technology to improve health to peace-building…and more. One of these ideas will eventually be awarded a $10,000 prize for their country program. Over the course of the next several weeks, we’ll share a handful of these ideas with you. Keep an eye on your inbox.

* An A+ *

ARC was recently upgraded to an ‘A+’ rating by CharityWatch, one of the largest charity watchdog groups in the U.S. The last few years, ARC had received an ‘A’ rating from the group. Groups included on the Top-Rated list “generally spend 75% or more of their budgets on programs, spend $25 or less to raise $100 in public support, do not hold excessive assets in reserve, and receive ‘open-book’ status for disclosure of basic financial information and documents to CharityWatch.”  You can see ARC’s listing here, which highlights “Top-Rated Charities in International Relief and Development”:   http://www.charitywatch.org/toprated.html#intrelief

Inside ARC - 9.19.13 - New Camp, New Ideas

Hi jay,

Here's an update on what's been going on around ARC the last few weeks.

Let us know if you have any questions.

-Daniel

Daniel Wordsworth, President

***********************************************

*New Camp in Rwanda*

People continue to flee the crisis in Congo.  The four main Congolese refugee camps in Rwanda — all of which are managed by ARC—are full to capacity. And the transit camp on the border has once again exceeded its capacity of 6,000, resulting in overcrowding and unsanitary conditions. And still more refugees are en route.

The United Nations and Rwandan Government have decided to open a fifth refugee camp in Mugombwa in the southern province that could house up to 15,000 residents. This week, ARC’s Rwanda team conducted a rapid assessment at the site, including surveying for site design, assessing water sources, and identifying environmental challenges. Below is an image of the site. Stay tuned for updates about this new camp.

*The Changemaker's Award*

We recently launched an ideas competition to collect new and fresh ideas from our 1,000+ staff members around the world.  All staff, worldwide, are eligible to participate. The question we’ve asked is: If you could do one simple thing, how would you make the ARC experience better for the people we serve?

The goal is to generate dozens of ideas from our staff around the world, ideas that we can share across the organization and with other organizations working in our field. However, one winning idea will be chosen, and the country office that generates the idea will be awarded $10,000 to spend on their program at their discretion. Once the contest has concluded, we look forward to sharing some of our staff’s new and exciting ideas with you!

*Youth. Somalia. Microenterprise*

Last week, Said Sheik-Abdi (an ARC Program Manager) and I spoke to a small group of ARC supporters about a new program we’re launching in Somalia. Somalia suffers from terrible unemployment (66%) – and opportunities for youth are very few. We’re launching a microenterprise program – with several other partners – with the goal of getting 50,000 youth self-employed within the next 3 years.

If you’d like to hear more about it, here’s an excerpt from my presentation (it’s about 6 minutes long): http://www.arcrelief.org/somaliabriefing.mp3

The Star Tribune also ran an article about the project just yesterday. You can find it here: http://www.startribune.com/local/224149231.html

Inside ARC - 9.3.13 - Syria

Hi jay,

I wanted to compile some information for you on the crisis in Syria. I know it can be difficult to keep track of all the information out there. Things have really deteriorated quickly there in the last few months, and especially in the last few days. What has been a devastating time for civilians in the region has the potential to become much worse.

Let us know if you have any questions.

-Daniel

CRISIS IN SYRIA

*Summary of the Crisis*

The conflict is now 2 ½ years old. Linked to the wider Arab Spring movement, nationwide anti-government protests evolved into an armed rebellion. The violence has displaced millions of people from their homes and communities and has made accessing food, water and other essentials increasingly difficult for Syrian civilians.

*Quick Numbers*

2 Million
Syrians (1 Million of them children) who’ve fled the country as refugees to Lebanon, Jordan, Turkey and other neighbors in the region

4.5 Million
An additional 4.5 million Syrians are displaced inside Syria.

100,000
# of people killed in the crisis, many of them civilians

3/15/2011
Marks the beginning of the conflict. Demonstrations spread nationwide by April of 2011

*ARC in the region*

ARC has joined forces with Jordan-based Questscope to provide support to Syrian refugees. The ARC and Questscope teams are working together to build programs providing shelter, water and sanitation, violence prevention, and protection services to people who have fled their homes. We are also assisting QuestScope as they offer informal education and mentoring programs for at-risk children in Za’atari Camp, the largest refugee camp in Jordan.

If you’d like to support our efforts for Syrian refugees, give online now.

Inside ARC - 8.15.13 - Sudan Floods

Hi jay,

Here's an update on what's been going on at ARC the last few weeks. Please let us know if you have questions or want more info.

-Daniel

*Floods in Sudan*

An estimated 150,000 people have been affected by heavy rain and flash floods throughout Sudan between the 1st and 4th of August. Houses have been damaged or destroyed. Diseases such as malaria and diarrhea are expected to rise. And, more rains this week will exacerbate the humanitarian situation.

ARC is responding. We’ll soon begin distributing emergency kits for families with items like blankets, a water can, plastic sheeting and rope, mosquito nets and hygiene kits. Once rains have subsided, we will rehabilitate clean water points and sanitation structures and lead community campaigns to clean-up debris from flooding that could be harmful or dangerous for families. If you’d like to support our efforts in Sudan, you can make a donation here.

*Partnering with Business*

This week, ARC President Daniel Wordsworth was quoted in the UK’s The Guardian newspaper.  The article, titled “An Uneasy Relationship: Human Rights Charities and Business,” discusses the challenges and opportunities that arise when organizations like the American Refugee Committee and businesses join as partners.  You can read the article here:
