Inside ARC - 2.12.13

Hi jay,

Here’s an update on what's going on at ARC. I got off a phone call 45 minutes ago with our teams in Syria and Congo. Updates from both teams are below.

*Syria Response*

The crisis in Syria is two years old, but violence is still intensifying. Every day, 5,000 Syrians flee their homeland and become refugees. An ARC response team arrived in Jordan one week ago to gather information, talk with refugees and see living conditions firsthand. The team is also meeting with partner organizations to exchange information and work together to develop plans for how best to support Syrian families. The results of the team’s assessment are pending. Stay tuned for more information and to hear how ARC plans to respond for Syrian families.

*Book Launch: Pit Stop in the Paris of Africa*

“The story of an independent woman afoot in a world of adventure, danger and romance.”
 -Brian Lambert, MINNPOST

Author Julie Dargis has worked in post-conflict environments overseas for more than 25 years. She began her career with Peace Corps in Morocco but has worked in dozens of countries with several international nonprofit organizations – including American Refugee Committee. From Rwanda to Serbia, South Sudan to Congo, Pit Stop in the Paris of Africa recounts stories and verse inspired by the unbreakable spirit of the people Julie has worked with over the years.

ARC is thrilled to support Julie for the launch of her new book. It is available for purchase here - $5 from the sale of each book goes to support the ongoing programs of the American Refugee Committee.

*Crisis in Congo*

We recently received a ‘situation report’ from Abraham Leno, our team lead in Congo. Below are excerpts from that report.

SITUATION REPORT: Congo

SECURITY:  Security situation in Goma much the same; reports of M23 militia moving closer to the displaced camps around Goma; civil society urging govt to continue with peace talks

PROGRAMS: Our team’s activities are ongoing – including cholera prevention efforts and support for survivors of sexual violence; a small ARC team visited impromptu refugee sites in the Masisi region and is drafting a proposal to undergo QIPs (quick impact projects) for families sheltering there; waiting for feedback on proposals submitting to the UN and US government.

FINANCE: Donations from private individuals will sustain the Congo operation for only 2 or 3 more weeks.
