Just 12 Hours More!

Hi jay-

There are just 12 hours left in 2014 for you to make a charitable contribution. If you've already made your gift for this year - THANK YOU SO MUCH! If you're still considering a year-end gift to ARC, you can make yours here: http://www.ARCrelief.org/donate .

On this day last year, we raised $61,289.40! We still have $43,789.40 to raise today before we achieve that goal.

We can do it! Will you help us get there? Every donation in any amount makes a difference for the families ARC serves throughout the world.

Thank you for your generosity and your partnership. I wish you and your family a happy and healthy new year.

Sincerely,

-Daniel

A Gift X 2!

Hello jay,

Today is the perfect moment to give.

Holly Myers - a tireless advocate for refugees and an ARC donor since 1994 - has volunteered with three others to match all donations up to $55,000, until December 31. So far, we've only raised $30,000 towards that goal. We need your help.

Will you make a gift now at www.ARCrelief.org/55match and make twice the difference? You can also call us at (800) 875-7060 and make your gift over the phone.

We absolutely must achieve this goal if we are to start out strong in 2015. You can help us do that. And, you'll be making double the impact for all we serve, who are working to rebuild their lives after tragedy.

Thank you for your continuing support and happy holidays!

Sincerely,

-Daniel

Two For The Money

Hello jay,

You might have been planning to make a donation before the year ends. Or maybe (like me) you've been so busy this time of year, you've barely had a spare moment to think about it. Whatever your situation, this is a great time to give because your donation will be matched 100 percent! But not for long...

Holly Myers - a tireless advocate for refugees and an ARC donor since 1994 - has volunteered with three others to match all donations, up to $55,000 until December 31. But their challenge probably won't last that long. We're currently on track to reach the goal by the 26th.

That means - if you want to make twice the difference with your gift - you should act now. You can donate at www.ARCrelief.org/55match or call us at (800) 875-7060 and make your gift over the phone.

You will make double the impact in helping mothers and babies survive childbirth, providing kids with and education, ensuring safe drinking water and preventing the spread of disease.

Thank you for your continuing support and happy holidays!

Sincerely,

-Daniel

Will you make a gift now and help us take advantage of this incredible opportunity: www.ARCrelief.org/55match ?

*TIME Magazine Person of the Year - The Ebola Fighter*

“They risked and persisted, sacrificed and saved” - TIME has selected the Ebola Fighters for Person of the Year 2014. We couldn’t agree more. The American Refugee Committee salutes our own Ebola Response Team and all of the aid and health workers from our colleague organizations who’ve been on the ground fighting Ebola since the very beginning of the outbreak. They put themselves in harm’s way in order to provide relief to people infected with the virus. They ran the risk of being infected themselves so that they could provide patients with world-class care and stop the epidemic in its tracks! I'm humbled by their sacrifice and heroism.

*"Teach a man to fish,...*

…and you feed him for a lifetime.” – so the proverb goes. Alongside the Fisheries Ministry, our staff in Somalia are training young men in Kismayo in southern Somalia to become fishermen. Participants undergo a three week course in fishing tackle and skills training. On completing the course, groups of 8 fishermen receive a simple boat and fishing equipment they can use to immediately start up a fishing business to support themselves and their families. The men participating in the program are mostly youth under the age of 30 – many of them have recently returned to Somalia from living abroad as refugees in Kenya’s Dadaab Refugee Camp or elsewhere. Before the twenty year conflict in Somalia, the port of Kismayo had a healthy fishing industry. Our team in Somalia looks forward to training more youth to be fishermen and helping revive the industry, as a whole. Here’s a recent article recognizing the program: http://horseedmedia.net/2014/12/10/somalia-refugees-turn-to-fishing-in-kismayo/

*You Make The World Better*

This month we’re highlighting all the amazing people in the ARC community through a campaign called You Make The World Better. Would you consider nominating someone you know who makes the world a better place? It doesn’t matter what they’re doing or where – just that they’re out in the world doing good work! You can submit a nomination using this link: http://umaketheworldbetter.wordpress.com/nominate-someone-2/

Here’s an example of an inspiring submission from Arafa Sheikmusa, an ARC staff member in Sudan, who nominated her primary school teacher, Thoraya Norri: https://www.facebook.com/ARCrelief/photos/a.100037827461.95028.18213037461/10152580790282462/?type=1

Thank You on #GivingTuesday!

Hello jay!

It’s Giving Tuesday in the United States - the perfect opportunity for us to give thanks to you for being a part of the American Refugee Committee community. As a supporter, you help make so much possible.

So, today, I want to give you an idea of just what you’ve made happen over the past year:

Ebola Response – ARC’s team is on the ground, about to take over an Ebola Treatment Unit in eastern Liberia. We’re providing lifesaving treatment to stop the devastation Ebola has caused so many families.

Darfur Doubled – We expanded and now help well over 700,000 people with clean water, health care, and other lifesaving services in this region of Sudan.

Zero Transmission – We have stopped the transmission of HIV from mother to child in Gihembe and Nyabiheke refugee camps in Rwanda.

Myanmar Program – We launched in eastern Myanmar helping communities fight drug-resistant malaria.

And Opened Asili – In pursuit of new approaches to humanitarian relief, we designed and launched a new social enterprise zone for families of modest means in DRC. For a few dollars, they can get clean water, see a doctor or purchase medicines – our hope is that we’ve created a platform for families to access essential services long after organizations like ARC have left.

That’s the tip of the iceberg. As a supporter you help us respond around the world – at any given moment – where the needs are greatest. You help us be there when people need us most.

Please know how much we value and rely on your support. We couldn’t do what we do without you.

Sincerely,

-Daniel

Inside ARC - 11.25.14 - Ebola

Hi jay,

This update from the American Refugee Committee is dedicated to ARC’s Ebola Response effort. Read more about what our team is doing below. If you have any questions, the invitation to contact us is open as always.

***********************************************

*2014 WEST AFRICAN EBOLA OUTBREAK*

-The Outbreak-

The Ebola epidemic in West Africa is an extraordinary event of international concern, the largest outbreak of the disease in history. 5,458 lives have been lost to the virus in West Africa. It’s a terrible story of fear, loss, pain and anguish for families living in countries like Guinea, Sierra Leone and Liberia. Public health experts are agreed that the best way to protect families in West Africa and the rest of the world from the future spread of the virus is to fight Ebola at its source in West Africa.

-ARC's Response-

The American Refugee Committee was requested by the U.S. government to respond and help people affected by this outbreak of Ebola in Africa. Starting in December, ARC will be managing a new Ebola Treatment Unit (ETU) in Fish Town, Liberia. The goal is to get at least 70% of people who’ve been infected through the doors of the ETU, quarantined and aggressively treated in our 60-bed facility. Ebola infections in that region have been relatively few thus far – so success means stopping the virus from ever taking hold in and around Fish Town. This is a key position for preventing the spread of Ebola to neighboring Ivory Coast.

ARC is working in close coalition with communities of Liberian Americans and the University of Minnesota’s School of Nursing and School of Public Health to organize our response effort. Our team includes medical professionals with years of experience working with infectious diseases and/or with connections to the health community in Liberia. On Thursday, 11 members departed from ARC’s Headquarters to Monrovia, Liberia for intensive training in Ebola care and Ebola treatment unit protocols. Upon completing the training, the team will head to Fish Town where they will be joined by a team of Liberian healthcare workers and support staff. At full capacity, 200 people are required to safely and effectively operate the ETU.

Here is a recent news story about the team that departed Thursday: http://www.bigstory.ap.org/article/415f6698b4b245f390109fd538ad5e2b/minnesota-health-care-workers-join-ebola-fight

-An Abundance of Caution-

ARC is responding based on the philosophy to do no harm – no harm in Liberia, no harm to our staff responding, and no harm to communities outside West Africa. In an abundance of caution, we have put in place rigorous protocols for treatment and care as well as strict rules and practices for team members returning home from Ebola-affected regions. When health workers return to the United States, they enter an immediate and mandatory home quarantine period. ARC makes arrangements for the delivery of all food and necessities during this 21-day period and twice daily monitors the temperature and health of the team member. The team is in regular contact with public health authorities, including weekly meetings with the Minnesota Department of Health.

*Black Friday/Cyber Monday Shopping*

If you’re shopping online already, you have an opportunity to generate additional support for the people ARC serves without doing anything extra. It’s through the AmazonSmile program. When you do your Holiday shopping (OR any shopping all year long) at AmazonSmile, Amazon donates 0.5% of the purchase price to American Refugee Committee. It might seem small, but it all adds up. Please, bookmark the link http://smile.amazon.com/ch/36-3241033 and support us every time you shop.

Inside ARC - 10.24.14 - Changemakers, Zero Transmissions

Hi jay,

Here's an update for you - the latest from ARC around the world. Feel free to get in touch if you ever have any questions about these items or anything else.

*Winner of the 2nd Annual Changemakers Award*

The Changemaker’s Award is an ideas competition whose goal is to generate new and fresh ideas from our 1,000+ staff members around the world.  This year we asked them:  In one simple way, how would you make the people we serve feel more valued, joyful or powerful? 226 staff submitted amazing ideas, including: timebanking, recreation for the elderly in refugee camps, and emergency preparedness drills for schools in Pakistan. I could not be more proud to work with such amazing, creative, hardworking individuals. You can see the full list of our top ten finalists here: www.arcrelief.org/Changemakers2014 .

This year’s winning idea is…Coding Schools for Refugees where refugee youth can learn to program and design for web technologies! It was submitted by: Aniqa Maqbool, Junaid Ali Tariq, Sohail Ahmed, Erum Aziz, Muhammad Imran, Cleopas Sikuwabo Mudahemuka, Frederic Auger and Ashish Gadnis! The concept is future oriented. It brings relevant technology to the hands of refugees, giving them wide-reaching opportunities far beyond the places where they live. We’re proud to honor the changemakers that submitted this winning idea!

*Mother to Child Transmission of HIV Eliminated*

ARC’s Health team in Rwanda has achieved a significant, life-changing milestone. In Gihembe and Nyabiheke refugee camps in Rwanda, mother-to-child transmission of HIV has been eliminated. No infants born to HIV-positive mothers in either camp have tested positive for HIV at 18 months. This achievement comes three years in advance of UNAIDS’ global plan for ending new HIV infections among children. Well-trained clinical staff that closely adhere to national PMTCT protocols, strong supply chain management, and effective community outreach and patient tracing are responsible for the success. Congratulations to the team!!!

*Annual Report*

Inside ARC - 10.3.14 - Myanmar, Darfur x2, A Launch

Hi jay,

Here's the latest from ARC around the world. You can always feel free to get in touch if you ever have any questions about these items or anything else.

-Daniel

***********************************************

*Asili Launch*

Asili – ARC’s social enterprise platform for child survival and maternal health in Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC) – celebrated its grand opening last week in Buhanga. More than 700 community members attended, including the Governor of South Kivu Province and the tribal King of the Kabare district. The Honorable James Swan (US Ambassador to DRC), USAID Assistant Administrator for Africa Earl Gast and other dignitaries were also in attendance for launch events.

A disruptive start-up business - Asili provides basic health care, clean water, and agricultural support to a community of more than 10,000 people.  Early input from the community has been exceptionally positive. Both health and agriculture are ahead of projections, and clean water services came online two weeks ago.

*Myanmar Training Completed*

A few weeks ago, ARC completed training of dozens of volunteer community health workers in Myanmar to screen rural communities for drug-resistant malaria and help treat patients who've been infected. These volunteers are students, farmers and other members of the community without medical backgrounds. They allow us to cast a wide net, covering a much larger geographic area than we otherwise could. The volunteers will monitor patients' courses of treatment using boats, bicycles and going by foot to extremely remote areas of the country. ARC is working closely with indigenous health partners, including the Karen Department of Health and Welfare and the Mon National Health Committee, to implement this program.

We're also partnering with the Myanmar Ministry of Health to put laboratory workers from indigenous health clinics through a one-month training to strengthen their malaria microscopy skills. We'll supply the facilities with 10 new microscopes to aid in screening for new cases of drug-resistant malaria.

*Darfur Relief Efforts Double*

ARC's relief efforts in Darfur have recently doubled. We are now the largest international relief organization in this region of Sudan. Since 2003, ARC has served people in South Darfur living either in displaced person camps or in rural villages. In recognition of ten years of exemplary service in South Darfur, ARC was asked to take over relief efforts in East Darfur operated by a departing agency. In East Darfur, ARC runs a hospital and provides other relief services similar to those in the south. Congratulations to our team in Darfur on the recognition of their dedication and good work!

Inside ARC - 8.28.14 - Cholera in South Sudan, Famine, Changemakers

Hi jay,

Here's the latest news from the places ARC works around the world. If you ever have any questions about these items or anything else, please always feel free to reach out to us.

-Daniel

Daniel Wordsworth, President

***********************************************

*Cholera Outbreak in South Sudan*

At the request of the International Organization for Migration (IOM), ARC has deployed a team of 16 international experts to respond to an outbreak of cholera in South Sudan. Nearly 6,000 South Sudanese have been infected with cholera since March – 123 have lost their lives. With support from IOM, ARC’s team of water, sanitation and health experts are deploying to South Sudan’s Eastern and Western Equatoria counties. They will test water for contamination, rehabilitate water systems, relocate or close contaminated latrines and train health workers and community hygiene promoters to share strategies with the public about how to prevent cholera infection. We’re also setting up oral rehydration points where people can access rehydration salts, and we’re prepositioning supplies throughout the region to quickly erect fully operative cholera treatment centers – in the event of a full-blown epidemic.

*Famine Monitoring*

South Sudan and Somalia are currently experiencing serious food insecurity conditions. In South Sudan, violence has prevented many farmers from planting their crops. As a result, the eastern half of the country is experiencing crisis and emergency-level food insecurity (one degree removed from famine). In Somalia, nearly 1 million people are experiencing food crisis, thanks to intensified conflict, restricted trade and a poor harvest. In both countries, conditions are expected to deteriorate over the coming weeks and months. ARC operates programs in both places and is monitoring the situations closely. We’re there to help people in any way we can, and we’re poised to mobilize a major response if called on to do so.

*Changemaker's Idea Competition*

Last week, we launched the 2nd Annual Changemaker’s Competition. It’s an idea competition that asks ARC staff worldwide – “in one simple way, how would you make the people we serve feel more valued, joyful or powerful?” Big or small, we’re looking for fresh, positive ideas that could possibly be replicated across all of ARC’s programs around the world. Last year, more than 100 ideas were submitted – the top ten included a refugee camp bicycle sharing scheme, an e-learning academy for women, and biomass briquette presses to convert refugee camp garbage into fuel. We’re expecting even more ARC staff will participate this year – entering even more innovative and exciting ideas.  Stay tuned to hear some of the best ideas from this year’s Changemaker’s Competition!

Inside ARC - 7.23.14 - Pakistan Crisis, New Clinic, Celebrations

Hi jay,

I've included a few updates from ARC program sites around the world. Don't hesitate to get in touch if you have any questions about these items or anything else.

-Daniel

Daniel Wordsworth, President

P.S. Will you do me a favor? Reply to this email with a short message and let me know if these updates are valuable to you. You can also let me know what you like. Or if there is other information you'd like to see.

***********************************************

*Pakistan IDP Crisis*

Insecurity in Pakistan's North Waziristan region has forced nearly 1 million people to flee their homes. Most have traveled east to other areas of Pakistan to escape the violence. People who have been displaced say they aren't receiving enough assistance in the form of basic services like food, water and shelter. ARC is working closely with partner organizations present on the ground and have shipped food packages, medicine, and hygiene kits to District Bannu which houses more than 60% of the IDP population. ARC is also ready to provide medical assistance to children and mothers as soon as it is permitted to enter the area. Stay tuned for updates on the crisis and ARC's response.

*First Asili Clinic*

Last week we opened our first Asili social enterprise clinic in rural DRC where families pay market rates in order to receive health care services and medicines. Asili is a pilot providing a lifesaving menu of primary care services at rates that even families with very limited resources can afford. In addition to health care, families can also access safe, clean water daily through Asili, and local farmers can get help improving their yields and selling their crops at market. Because Asili services are streamlined, costs stay very low. But we’re also training our staff to provide service at a level that would delight and astonish any customer. After initial infrastructure investments, Asili is designed to sustain itself on payments from customers alone – and won’t rely on US government or UN aid budgets to survive.

After being open just one week, the response from customers is very positive. Clinic and medicine fees are being paid, and people are coming from around the region to receive services at the Asili clinic. On Saturday, one woman came a great distance to visit the clinic and she asked when we’ll be opening Asili near her home. We’re refining the model and ensuring Asili runs smoothly in this first service zone, and then we’ll look to expand past the pilot phase later in 2014 and 2015. Each Asili zone is expected to begin making a profit within three years.

*World Refugee Day in Uganda*

Last month, ARC hosted two World Refugee Day(WRD) celebrations at Kyangwali and Nakivale refugee settlements in Uganda. The celebration at Kyangwali was Uganda’s official country-wide observance of World Refugee Day. Uganda’s treatment of refugees is unique in the world. Nearly a quarter of a million refugees reside in Uganda, and on arrival many of these people receive their own plot of land where they can build a home and grow crops. They enjoy a freedom of movement that is not true for refugees sheltering in most other countries. Several of Uganda’s ministers and other government officials were in attendance at Kyangwali to voice their support for refugee communities throughout Uganda.

The WRD celebration at Nakivale settlement was a more relaxed community affair. Refugees representing several nationalities paraded through the settlement. Youth choirs sang songs, Burundian drummers thumped away, dance groups boogied down, and Somali drama teams performed theatrical skits. There were speeches from community leaders, and then a large picnic of chicken and rice for all who were assembled. [Below: A photo of the parade at Nakivale settlement].

Inside ARC - 7.2.14 - Somalia Jobs, South Sudan, Back-to-School

Hi jay,

Here's the latest from ARC. If you have any questions or want more info, don't hesitate to get in touch.

*En Route to 50,000 Jobs*

ARC recently joined with partners Kaah Express and Silatech to launch Somalia’s first commercial microfinance institution. Unemployment in Somalia currently tops 65%. This unique public-private partnership will promote job creation and provide opportunity for people in Somalia—particularly young people  and low-income women. Loans will enable entrepreneurs to start and expand small businesses, such as fishing, carpentry, tailoring, and small retail shop management. The program also offers a robust package of financial education, life skills, and business training to improve the ability of clients to make informed decisions about their financial needs. The goal is to provide financial access and stimulate economic development throughout Somalia.

Earlier this year, we also launched a vocational training program in Somalia, working with Somali businesses to train young people in the skills businesses are lacking. It’s been incredibly popular both among companies and eager trainees. These two programs are the centerpiece in achieving our goal of creating 50,000 new jobs in Somalia in the next 5 years.

*South Sudan Conflict and Hunger*

The conflict in South Sudan continues on. Peace talks seem to be going nowhere, even as the country’s neighbors threaten the warring sides with sanctions. More than 2 million South Sudanese have abandoned their homes since violence broke out in December. As a result, much of the country’s fields have gone unplanted, and families have left their emergency stocks of food behind as they fled. Now more than 7 million people are at risk of starvation and disease, but the violence is making it difficult to get relief through.

Much of the areas where ARC works have remained somewhat secure, and we’ve been able to continue providing families with lifesaving services. As the situation evolves, our team is there ready to respond in whatever way we are needed. We will keep you updated on developments in South Sudan.

*School Back In Session*

School is now back in session at Fisherman’s Village Elementary School, San Jose Central School and San Jose National High School in Tacloban, Philippines. All three schools were devastated by Typhoon Haiyan in November, and teachers and hundreds of students lost their lives. With funds from ARC’s generous individual supporters, our teams have been rehabilitating the schools. Work is still in progress, but we’ve repaired ceilings, roofs, windows and doors to return the buildings and yards to areas suitable for children and learning.  Below are some before and after images from San Jose Central School.

*And the Winning Photographer is ...*

…Yasir Ilyas – Monitoring and Evaluation Officer for ARC in Pakistan. During the month of May, ARC held its first global staff photo contest on Facebook. 71 photographs told the stories of ARC’s work around the world, from well rehabilitation and stove building to vocational skills training. More than 15,000 people saw the photos and 2,883 votes were cast. Here's what Yasir said about the winning photo: “I was astonished to see the field preparation by this woman to sow kitchen gardening seed (given out by ARC). She said, ‘This is my prepared field, and I have full access and control over this part of land.

For his first place finish, Yasir will receive a brand new camera! Thank you to everyone who voted and participated. If you didn’t get a chance to look at the contest album in May, it’s still up and you can check it out here: http://goo.gl/PPkYK9

*Congrats to Darfur Midwives!*

ARC sponsored ten students through the Nyala Midwifery School in Darfur, Sudan earlier this year – paying tuition, food, uniform, and transportation fees during their studies. One of the ARC students, Fatiya, took the #2 position in overall performance and was honored at a recent graduation ceremony. Fatiya described her experience: “I have acquired good skills… and want to utilize them for the benefit of women suffering in my community. I do not know what I would do to raise my children without this training….Now, I will have a job/career to sustain myself and family.”  Fatiya hopes that all of her 4 children complete their school and go to Khartoum University—and wants at least one of them to be a medical doctor who could follow in her footsteps.
