Getting There!

Hello jay,

A few days ago I sent you a note about ARC's December matching challenge. I'm happy to say we've made progress towards the goal! We have $25,507 left to raise between now and the end of the year. Will you consider helping us once more before 2015 comes to a close? Your donation made by December 31 will be matched 100 percent!

Holly Myers - a tireless advocate for refugees and an ARC donor since 1994 - has volunteered with a group of others to match all donations, up to $62,000 this December. When you give now, you'll be going twice as far to help people struggling to survive crises and get back control of their lives.

If you've already sent in a gift, THANK YOU! If you haven't yet made your gift, will you help us take advantage of this incredible opportunity: www.ARCrelief.org/62match ?

Thank you for your continuing support and happy holidays!

Sincerely,

-Daniel

Double Your Impact!

Hello jay,

THANK YOU. It's because of support from people like you that ARC has been able to step up to the ever mounting challenges of the global refugee crisis. Will you consider helping us once more before 2015 comes to a close? Your donation made by December 31 will be matched 100 percent!

Inside ARC - 12.10.15 - ARC Team Designs Mobile App and Hello from Zaatari Refugee Camp

Hello jay,

Every couple of weeks, I like to share what is new in ARC programs around the world. You make our work possible and are an integral part of the ARC family. We appreciate your questions and feedback, so please feel free to send them our way!

Thank you for your continuing support.

+ South Sudan Team Creates Mobile App to Improve Healthcare  +

In remote regions of South Sudan, our team works hard to provide critical healthcare services. Every moment is crucial and information can be lifesaving.  Which is why our team designed a text messaging (SMS) app to much more quickly provide important alerts about possible outbreaks and more easily send public health reports to county officials. Previously, in order to submit their reports, health workers had to shutter health facilities and hand-deliver their paper reports. And the communities they served could be without medical care for days. This new mobile phone-based tool has been introduced in three of the counties in South Sudan where ARC is working. It has been so successful that the Ministry of Health has requested ARC to scale it up with hopes of introducing it nationwide!

+ Hello From Zaatari Refugee Camp +

Our CEO Daniel Wordsworth just returned from a tour of the Middle East where he met with leaders in Dubai, Doha, Amman, and Abu Dhabi. While in Jordan, he met with volunteers leaders in Zaatari Refugee Camp who run the youth center set up by our partners at Questscope earlier this year. The youth center in Zaatari Refugee Camp is led and run by Syrian refugees. They offer classes in film making, photography, art, dance and exercise. They also gather for daily volleyball games and run a free library in the compound.

Inside ARC - 10.23.15 - ARC Honored by Vice President of Liberia

+ Liberian Vice President to Honor ARC +

Tonight, American Refugee Committee will be recognized by Liberian Vice President, H.E. Joseph N. Boakai in honor of our humanitarian efforts to eradicate Ebola in Liberia. Vice President Boakai will honor ARC during a town hall meeting of the Consulate of the Republic of Liberia in Minnesota. Last year, during the height of the Ebola epidemic and in collaboration with Liberian Minnesotans, ARC teams worked to setup and provide the only Liberian-led Ebola Treatment Unit in the country. Located in Fish Town, River Gee County, a treatment unit was built with medical teams prepped, trained, and ready to manage any influx of the disease. Now, ARC is reinforcing the health system infrastructure in the region, training local health workers on early detection, surveillance, and referral capabilities. Working with local partners and schools to develop a preparedness and education plan for the area, ARC is helping to ensure that River Gee is well-equipped to respond to any future health crisis.

+ ARC at Global Maternal Newborn Health Conference +

This week, American Refugee Committee Health Technical Advisor, Heather Buesseler, presented at the Global Maternal Newborn Health Conference in Mexico City. This was the first-ever global conference to combine maternal & newborn health. Buesseler notes that approaching the health of mothers and newborns through linked services is "revolutionary in the global health field."

Buesseler presented a study conducted in Thailand by ARC colleague Anjali Madeira. Through in-depth interviews and focus group discussions, Madeira dug into the birth experience of 24 Burmese refugee women in Thailand refugee camps. Their stories reflected that a lack of cultural understanding often proved to be a major obstacle for a respectful and safe birth experience. Her study led her to suggest a two-fold approach to changing the birth experience for displaced populations. By providers taking part in cultural competency and respectful maternity care trainings and women and families learning about their childbirth rights, providers and women can work together to change the birth experience in refugee camps.

Follow more of the action from the conference here

+ Weaving Together Refugee Communities +

On any given Saturday in Salt Lake City, Utah you can find a group of resettled Karen women who meet to weave in hopes of tying their traditional culture with their new community. Weaving is an act of preserving a culture now thousands of miles away. The last couple of years, the group has had difficulty sourcing weaving threads to continue this beloved tradition. In their search for a supplier, the group found ARC's Yarn Bank Project in Thailand. We were able to connect them to the supplier used by the Yarn Bank and Women Weaving Group in Nu Po refugee camp. The group in Utah has been able to resume their weaving project and plans are underway to connect them to the group of women weavers in Nu Po camp to exchange ideas and patterns.

+ Syria Update +

Last Tuesday, Syrian aid worker Roy Moussalli spoke to a group of supporters in Minneapolis. Roy works on the ground in Syria, leading a relief effort there and helping to get desperately needed aid to thousands of people.  He's mobilized a team of 1,600 citizen humanitarians inside Syria, ordinary people who have been moved to action. Together, they provide help in areas most would dare not go. Roy told us about conditions in Damascus and Aleppo, where there are constant power outages and an unreliable water supply. In many places, families who have fled their homes live in collective shelters, buildings that were not designed to house people on a massive scale. Roy works to provide the crucial infrastructure needed to make these buildings livable, like walls, partitions, sanitation infrastructure, and a water supply. Thanks to Roy and his team, thousands of Syrians are getting a chance at survival.

Check out Roy's recent interview with Public Radio International's "The World"

+ 2015 Changemakers Idea Competition: And the winner is... +

The results are in for our 2015 Changemakers Idea Competition! The winners of this year's competition are Connie Alupo and Joseph Kyobe, ARC staff in Uganda, for their idea Safe Ride Stickers for Motorcycle Advocates. Congratulations to Connie and Joseph, who created an idea that changes the perception of the "bad boys" of the refugee settlement, putting motorcycle taxi drivers at the heart of protecting women and girls.

We asked our staff around the world to share their ideas in answer to this question:

"In one simple way, how would you make the people we serve feel more valued, joyful or powerful?"

The answers we received were incredible, and it was very difficult for the judges to choose just one winner – after reading all 481 submissions, they were amazed by the wealth of ideas. Now ARC is gathering momentum behind these ideas and thinking of ways we can encourage every staff member to pursue them – whether they won or not. We believe that everyone in every community has a gift to offer, and the Changemakers Award is providing a platform for ARC staff to share their gift with the world.

+ Breaking Ground on Asili Zone 2 +

Ground has broken on the second Asili zone! Asili, our social enterprise in Congo, launched its first zone in July 2014. Currently providing a health clinic, a clean water system, and an agricultural cooperative in the first zone, Asili is expanding its services to a new community. Construction on the second clinic, located in the town of Cirunga, is well underway - the building scheduled to be completed by the end of October. The Asili team is focusing on quality control and assurance for clinic staff, which includes in-depth training on clinical knowledge, clinical skills, and customer service. Marketing for the Asili clinic is ramping up as well, with radio ads, including a segment called "Ask the Asili Expert," in the works. The expanded water system and agriculture cooperative are expected to go live in the coming months.

It Is Now.

jay,

We’ve never seen this before. The time to act is right now.

More than 11 million Syrians have fled their homes. And they’re living on the brink. It’s a crisis the scale of which the world hasn’t seen since World War II.

It might all seem complicated, but helping is so simple. It’s what ARC does.

Syrians don’t have the basics. They’re desperate – so many parents don’t even have enough food to stop their children going hungry. There hasn’t been enough support for Syrian families, and now the situation is getting so much worse.

ARC works with Syrians inside Syria in places like Aleppo and Homs. We help families find shelter, get clean water, and we provide other critical services. But Syrian families need so much more.

You can take action now, and your gift will support our teams in Syria and Jordan. Your donation now will make an impact.

In Service,

-Daniel

Inside ARC - 8.27.15 - Celebrating World Humanitarian Day

Hello jay,

Here is an update on what's new with ARC around the world. We appreciate your questions and feedback, so please feel free to send them our way!

+ World Humanitarian Day +

Last week, our staff around the globe celebrated World Humanitarian Day. We continue to remember the challenging environments in which our colleagues work each day. Kapoeta East in South Sudan is such a place – large, remote and lacking in critical health services. That is, until our team partnered with Health Pooled Fund in support of the re-opening and construction of seven health facilities. Providing service to nearly 114,500 people, these facilities are the channel to life saving care that many need. Families no longer have to travel a distance for quality healthcare. Instead, they are able to seek and find such care in their own community. In honor of World Humanitarian Day, our team in South Sudan was recognized for the strides they’ve made in service to the people of Kapoeta.

+ Flour Mills Cooperative in Rwanda  +

For a refugee in Rwanda, food insecurity can mean not having enough food and poor nutrition. But it can also even lead to violence against women. Refugees in the camps receive food rations that often come in the form of raw food which must be ground at a mill outside of the camp in order to be used in cooking. For many, cost and distance from the camp can make this step prohibitive. It can mean that a young girl is returning alone to the camp late at night, or that a man must sell a portion of his food ration to pay for the service of using the mill. In Mugombwa, Kiziba and Mahama refugee camps, ARC’s new Flour Mills Cooperative project seeks to eliminate these challenges by bringing the solution to the refugees. The construction of grinding mills within camp limits has brought greater food security, enhanced nutrition education, protection and income generation.

+ Changemaker Award +

The Changemaker Award celebrates the unlimited potential and amazing insights of our staff around the world. We ask all ARC staff one question:

In one simple way how would you make the people we serve feel more valued, joyful or powerful?

ARC staff sent in 481 ideas from around the world. Today we’re starting to count down the Top Ten ideas with this idea from Qasir in Pakistan! Qasir, a Program Associate in Pakistan, submitted his idea about gathering young girls with industry leaders to debate why investing in girls is a great idea for every industry. Read more about Qasir’s idea here and stay tuned to see the rest of our Top Ten Changemakers Ideas!

Inside ARC - 8.14.15 - Justice for Refugees in Nakivale

Hello jay,

Here is an update on what's new with ARC around the world. We appreciate your questions and feedback, so please feel free to send them our way!

Thank you for your continuing support.

+ Justice for Refugees +

In Uganda, some survivors of sexual and domestic violence have been waiting months – even up to a year – for justice and some small degree of closure. A huge backlog of cases has prevented these refugee women from having their day in court. And even those who did get a court date often were forced to postpone either because they had no transportation to the city from Nakivale refugee settlement where they live or they had no one to translate for them during proceedings. ARC’s team in Uganda came up with the longshot idea to bring the judges to the survivors, and they rallied to actually make this creative solution a reality. They invited district judges and magistrates to the refugee settlement, and over the course of a 12 day judicial process 80+ cases were heard. This was the first time that any judge had come to Nakivale settlement to provide resolution for both survivors and defendants.

+ Milestone for Kapoeta Civil Hospital +

One year ago, American Refugee Committee began working in Kapoeta Civil Hospital in South Sudan. Over this time, our team has worked to increase provision of obstetrics and newborn care services. Thanks to the dedication of the hospital staff, expectant mothers in this community are experiencing healthy labor. In 12 months, we haven't lost a single mother in childbirth!

+ Asili Update +

Asili, our social enterprise in Eastern Congo, is expanding! We launched the first zone in July 2014 and we’ve now begun work on the second clinic site. Located in Cirunga, the second clinic will be about a 30 minute drive from the first clinic. We are so grateful to Minneapolis-based design firm, RSP Architects, for generously contributing their time and expertise to design the new clinic. You can check out the design below! Similar to the first zone in Buhanga, the Asili zone in Cirunga will also serve a community of roughly 10,000 people with high-quality health care, clean water and agricultural cooperative services.

+ 2015 Changemakers Idea Competition +

We are in the midst of the 3rd annual Changemakers Award competition! We’ve asked our staff around the world to share their ideas in answer to this question:

“In one simple way, how would you make the people we serve feel more valued, joyful or powerful?”

We saw some great ideas in last year’s competition – coding schools for refugees, a recreation and laughter therapy program for elderly and driving school for refugees– and we are anticipating even more this year. The competition is open through July 31st and we’ve already had more than 100 ideas submitted! Follow the action here as we announce the top 10 finalists and the winner over the next few months.

Inside ARC - 7.9.15 - Hairdressers Prevent Violence

Hello jay,

Here is an update on what's new with ARC around the world. We appreciate your questions and feedback, so please feel free to send them our way!

+ Cut It Out Project in Nu Po +

In Nu Po refugee camp, the Cut It Out project has taken life as an initiative that trains female hairdressers to identify and direct victims of intimate partner violence to help. It provides a new pathway for victims of domestic violence to access support. Implemented in May, this project takes advantage of the unique position of hairdressers to recognize signs and symptoms of abuse due to the nature of their service.

+ VIDEO: Mahama Camp +

As of right now, nearly 40,000 refugees have arrived in Rwanda from Burundi. Over the last two months, ARC has led the construction of Mahama Refugee Camp, a new home for refugees fleeing political turmoil. The team is currently building thousands of shelters and community structures to help protect newly arrived families. The team is also hard at work at the camp's hospital and nutrition center, helping hundreds of new moms and children, many of whom suffer from malnutrition after their long journey. Doctors and nurses at the hospital are seeing over 200 patients a day. The ARC team is working long days and nights, putting in hours and hours to make sure we do everything we can to help the new families of Mahama Refugee Camp. Check out this video of some of the sights and sounds from Mahama:

+ SPOTLIGHT: Gelman, Rosenberg and Freedman +

We wanted to take a moment to recognize our amazing auditors at Gelman, Rosenberg & Freedman. They check up on our financials, but we also have a unique partnership; they’ve flown to ARC country programs in Somalia, Sudan, South Sudan, Liberia, Rwanda, and more. They understand our work. “We love working with GRF because they are consummate professionals who believe in really getting to know what we do. They are hands-on and, when necessary, ready to dig into the details while keeping in mind the big picture and our mission,” says Tharangi, ARC’s Finance Controller. “They are never intimidated to visit even our most challenging locations.” GRF auditors know our programs inside and out and look forward to visiting ARC staff in different country programs each audit season. One veteran GRF auditor fondly recalled her experience conducting an audit for ARC while living in a tent. “One of my favorite experiences was living in the tent city in Fishtown, Liberia while ARC was setting up the ETU (Ebola Treatment Center) there,” explained the GRF auditor. It’s an experience she won’t soon forget.

Thank you Gelman, Rosenberg & Freedman for your dedicated partnership!

+ We Need Your Vote +

Please VOTE! Help ARC's Asili project win $25,000 from the Aspen Ideas Award! Asili is a business startup based in Congo and co-created by ARC and its partners. Asili’s integrated ‘strip mall’ puts three social enterprises – a clean water business, a health clinic and an agriculture co-op – together on one platform, allowing families in DRC to move from problem to solution. We’re excited for the opportunity to publically recognize its potential to create lasting impact. Finalists will get a chance to pitch their ideas to a live panel of judges at the Aspen Ideas Festival this June, vying for a chance at the top prize. To help Asili make it to this final round, we need your votes by June 1st. To vote:

1) Go to this link: http://bit.ly/1EDJ6sP (You should find Asili at the top of the list).

2) Click on the triangle next to the description of Asili.

3) You'll be prompted to log-in with Facebook, Twitter, Google, LinkedIn or Yahoo. After logging-in, you'll be returned to the page with Asili at the top. Click the triangle again, and you should see your vote counted. Thanks for your support!

+ UPDATE: Burundian Refugees +

ARC's Rwanda team continues to do amazing work responding to the Burundian refugee crisis. They’ve been busy building up Mahama Camp, providing refugees with desperately needed health care and nutritional support. In just a few short weeks, the team has gotten this camp up and running and serving thousands of families. Just a bare patch of ground a month ago, Mahama Camp is now sheltering more than 20,000 people! See how the camp is shaping up...

This year, 4 of the top 5 contest photos were taken by ARC’s Pakistan team. In an act of good sportsmanship and solidarity with their worldwide colleagues, Yasir and the Pakistan team have unanimously decided to dedicate both the honor and prize (a new camera!) to their dear colleague in Rwanda and other Top 5-finisher, Betty Umugiraneza. + Burundian Refugees Arrive in Rwanda +

With political uncertainty tied to the upcoming June elections, more than 40,0000 Burundians have fled their homeland for safe haven in Rwanda, Tanzania and DRC (see BBC article on the situation in Burundi: http://www.bbc.com/news/business-32618391).

ARC’s Rwanda team has been working tirelessly to build a refugee camp to offer shelter to the nearly 20,000 Burundians who have arrived in Rwanda seeking stability and safety. Mahama Camp is located in eastern Rwanda on land allocated by the Rwandan government. Working alongside Rwandans from the local community, the ARC team has focused on putting up family tent shelters, community kitchens and other structures to shelter and provide for those in the camp. Our health team is on the ground in Mahama Camp providing health care to the families arriving. A few days ago, our team helped to safely deliver the first baby born at Mahama –little Miss Iradukunda Diella (below). Stay tuned for more updates on this developing crisis.

+ VIDEO: Women's Day Marathon +

We recently shared that the ARC Uganda team at Nakivale Refugee Settlement held a race on International Women’s Day to promote the safety of women and girls. In this video, you’ll see video of the race and hear Harriet (Protection Manager for ARC at Nakivale) talk about what it was like to organize the 12 kilometer 'marathon' for refugees who ran to support women in their community: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=DXHdFAN2qrA

We're Getting Close

Hello jay,

We’re so close. We set a goal to raise $50,000 in donations by March 31 – which our corporate partner Atomic Data will then match dollar-for-dollar. So far, hundreds of generous supporters have come forward giving a total of $41,915! We have 6 days and $8,000 left to go towards that goal. Will you help us get there?

THANK YOU SO MUCH if you've already made a donation. You've helped us get to where we are now. If you'd be willing to share the challenge with your friends and family, that might put us over the line!

If you haven't yet made a donation, will you consider it? You’ll double your impact. Atomic Data will match your donation, and you'd be helping us take full advantage of this opportunity. You can give online now at: http://www.ARCrelief.org/atomic

Remember, each and every donation is important to the people we serve. Donations starting at $10 and going all the way up to the remaining $8,085 will qualify to be matched by Atomic Data.

Thank you so much for your support… And for helping us meet this challenge before the deadline.

Sincerely,

-Daniel

P.S. Gifts starting at $10 will be matched:http://www.arcrelief.org/atomic
