Inside ARC - 1.14.16 - 16 Days, Future Afghan Refugee Doctors

Hello jay, Happy New Year! This is my first update of 2016. Every couple of weeks I like to share what's new with ARC programs around the world. I appreciate your questions and feedback, so please feel free to send them our way! Thank you for your continuing support.  -Daniel Daniel Wordsworth, President ***********************************************  + Thank You For 2015!  + With the support of the ARC community in 2015, we were able to help more than 3 million people in 12 countries around the world. We responded to major emergencies, including the crisis in Syria and the Ebola outbreak in West Africa. And, we continued our work as the primary and reproductive health care provider for millions of people in places like Sudan and South Sudan. On behalf of our more than 1,600 team members worldwide, thank you so much. We couldn't do this without you. Some of our team recorded this thank you video for you: https://youtu.be/eXeDrhEzfxs + Medical Training for Young Afghan Refugees + Our staff in Pakistan were amazed! Thanks to funding from the U.S. State Department's Bureau of Population, Refugees and Migration, they were able to create a 1-year multi-disciplined medical training program for Afghan refugee youth living in Pakistan. When they put the word out about the program in the newspaper and on FM radio, they were astounded to receive more than 1,000 applications for just 120 available spots. (A group of the students with ARC's Dr. Erum Zarief) The program just launched and the students – aged 16-20 – are enthusiastic to change their lives and be able to return home and serve their communities with the new skills they're learning. + 16 Days of Activism + Every year starting on November 25, communities around the world stand up to fight violence against women and girls during the 16 Days of Activism campaign. ARC teams – from Pakistan to South Sudan, Uganda to Thailand, Somalia to Syria – organized dozens of events all with the goal of creating safe spaces for women and girls living in communities that have been affected by disaster. Activities included speech and debate competitions and community conversations and discussions. There were also sporting events, musical celebrations, painting competitions, puppet shows and games – all with the goal of building awareness and inspiring action to prevent violence against women and girls. + 12 Months, 12 Gifts + Each year in January, we see an influx of ARC donors deciding to become sustaining monthly donors. Inside ARC - 12.10.15 - ARC Team Designs Mobile App and Hello from Zaatari Refugee Camp

Thank you for your continuing support.  -Daniel Daniel Wordsworth, President ***********************************************  + South Sudan Team Creates Mobile App to Improve Healthcare  + In remote regions of South Sudan, our team works hard to provide critical healthcare services. Every moment is crucial and information can be lifesaving.  Which is why our team designed a text messaging (SMS) app to much more quickly provide important alerts about possible outbreaks and more easily send public health reports to county officials. Previously, in order to submit their reports, health workers had to shutter health facilities and hand-deliver their paper reports. And the communities they served could be without medical care for days. This new mobile phone-based tool has been introduced in three of the counties in South Sudan where ARC is working. It has been so successful that the Ministry of Health has requested ARC to scale it up with hopes of introducing it nationwide! + Hello From Zaatari Refugee Camp + Our CEO Daniel Wordsworth just returned from a tour of the Middle East where he met with leaders in Dubai, Doha, Amman, and Abu Dhabi. While in Jordan, he met with volunteers leaders in Zaatari Refugee Camp who run the youth center set up by our partners at Questscope earlier this year. The youth center in Zaatari Refugee Camp is led and run by Syrian refugees. They offer classes in film making, photography, art, dance and exercise. They also gather for daily volleyball games and run a free library in the compound. Inside ARC - 10.23.15 - ARC Honored by Vice President of Liberia

Thank you for your continuing support.  -Daniel Daniel Wordsworth, President ***********************************************  + Liberian Vice President to Honor ARC + Tonight, American Refugee Committee will be recognized by Liberian Vice President, H.E. Joseph N. Boakai in honor of our humanitarian efforts to eradicate Ebola in Liberia. Vice President Boakai will honor ARC during a town hall meeting of the Consulate of the Republic of Liberia in Minnesota. Last year, during the height of the Ebola epidemic and in collaboration with Liberian Minnesotans, ARC teams worked to setup and provide the only Liberian-led Ebola Treatment Unit in the country. Located in Fish Town, River Gee County, a treatment unit was built with medical teams prepped, trained, and ready to manage any influx of the disease. Now, ARC is reinforcing the health system infrastructure in the region, training local health workers on early detection, surveillance, and referral capabilities. Working with local partners and schools to develop a preparedness and education plan for the area, ARC is helping to ensure that River Gee is well-equipped to respond to any future health crisis.  + ARC at Global Maternal Newborn Health Conference + This week, American Refugee Committee Health Technical Advisor, Heather Buesseler, presented at the Global Maternal Newborn Health Conference in Mexico City. This was the first-ever global conference to combine maternal & newborn health. Buesseler notes that approaching the health of mothers and newborns through linked services is "revolutionary in the global health field."  Buesseler presented a study conducted in Thailand by ARC colleague Anjali Madeira. Through in-depth interviews and focus group discussions, Madeira dug into the birth experience of 24 Burmese refugee women in Thailand refugee camps. Their stories reflected that a lack of cultural understanding often proved to be a major obstacle for a respectful and safe birth experience. Her study led her to suggest a two-fold approach to changing the birth experience for displaced populations. By providers taking part in cultural competency and respectful maternity care trainings and women and families learning about their childbirth rights, providers and women can work together to change the birth experience in refugee camps.  Follow more of the action from the conference here.    + Weaving Together Refugee Communities + On any given Saturday in Salt Lake City, Utah you can find a group of resettled Karen women who meet to weave in hopes of tying their traditional culture with their new community. Weaving is an act of preserving a culture now thousands of miles away. The last couple of years, the group has had difficulty sourcing weaving threads to continue this beloved tradition. In their search for a supplier, the group found ARC's Yarn Bank Project in Thailand. We were able to connect them to the supplier used by the Yarn Bank and Women Weaving Group in Nu Po refugee camp. The group in Utah has been able to resume their weaving project and plans are underway to connect them to the group of women weavers in Nu Po camp to exchange ideas and patterns. + Giving + At the request of readers, I always include these links so they're easy to find when you need them. Inside ARC - 10.5.15 - Syria, Changemakers, ASILI 2

Thank you for your continuing support.  -Daniel Daniel Wordsworth, President ***********************************************  + Syria Update + Last Tuesday, Syrian aid worker Roy Moussalli spoke to a group of supporters in Minneapolis. Roy works on the ground in Syria, leading a relief effort there and helping to get desperately needed aid to thousands of people.  He's mobilized a team of 1,600 citizen humanitarians inside Syria, ordinary people who have been moved to action. Together, they provide help in areas most would dare not go. Roy told us about conditions in Damascus and Aleppo, where there are constant power outages and an unreliable water supply. In many places, families who have fled their homes live in collective shelters, buildings that were not designed to house people on a massive scale. Roy works to provide the crucial infrastructure needed to make these buildings livable, like walls, partitions, sanitation infrastructure, and a water supply. Thanks to Roy and his team, thousands of Syrians are getting a chance at survival. Check out Roy's recent interview with Public Radio International's "The World" + 2015 Changemakers Idea Competition: And the winner is... + The results are in for our 2015 Changemakers Idea Competition! The winners of this year's competition are Connie Alupo and Joseph Kyobe, ARC staff in Uganda, for their idea Safe Ride Stickers for Motorcycle Advocates. Congratulations to Connie and Joseph, who created an idea that changes the perception of the "bad boys" of the refugee settlement, putting motorcycle taxi drivers at the heart of protecting women and girls.  We asked our staff around the world to share their ideas in answer to this question:  "In one simple way, how would you make the people we serve feel more valued, joyful or powerful?" The answers we received were incredible, and it was very difficult for the judges to choose just one winner – after reading all 481 submissions, they were amazed by the wealth of ideas. Now ARC is gathering momentum behind these ideas and thinking of ways we can encourage every staff member to pursue them – whether they won or not. We believe that everyone in every community has a gift to offer, and the Changemakers Award is providing a platform for ARC staff to share their gift with the world.    + Breaking Ground on Asili Zone 2 + Ground has broken on the second Asili zone! Asili, our social enterprise in Congo, launched its first zone in July 2014. Currently providing a health clinic, a clean water system, and an agricultural cooperative in the first zone, Asili is expanding its services to a new community. Construction on the second clinic, located in the town of Cirunga, is well underway - the building scheduled to be completed by the end of October. The Asili team is focusing on quality control and assurance for clinic staff, which includes in-depth training on clinical knowledge, clinical skills, and customer service. Marketing for the Asili clinic is ramping up as well, with radio ads, including a segment called "Ask the Asili Expert," in the works.
