Recovery in Pakistan Just Beginning

jay- Imagine losing everything. Your home and all your belongings. Your farm land and animals, which were your means to support your family. Could you cope? Families in Pakistan haven’t had a choice. After flooding began in late July, many watched helplessly as floodwaters carried away everything they had. Their mud homes, their belongings and their livestock were rushed away.  Will you help families who lost everything rebuild their lives? Please make a donation today! About 21 million people have been affected by the flooding in Pakistan. That’s more than the number of people impacted by the 2004 tsunami and 2010 Haiti earthquake, combined. Many were forced to seek shelter in makeshift refugee camps, living without the most basic essentials like clean water, food and lifesaving medicine. Take a look at the situation on the ground in Pakistan (video). Damp and muddy conditions and contaminated water have contributed to a host of health concerns. Our staff has been working hard to help families regain their health by providing medical care, medicine and rehydration treatment. We’ve distributed mosquito nets to guard against malaria, a mosquito-borne illness, and have vaccinated against diseases like measles to prevent outbreaks. To help families access safe water, we’ve distributed water purification tablets and clean water containers. Read more about our response in Pakistan. While the water has receded through much of Pakistan, the recovery effort is just beginning. Families are returning home or starting over in new communities because there's nothing to go back to. As they begin to look to the future, they require assistance to re-establish their lives. They desperately need shelter; livelihood programs to provide a means to support themselves; and sustainable sources of clean water in their communities.
