It’s a crisis the scale of which the world hasn’t seen since World War II. It might all seem complicated, but helping is so simple. It’s what ARC does. Syrians don’t have the basics. They’re desperate – so many parents don’t even have enough food to stop their children going hungry. There hasn’t been enough support for Syrian families, and now the situation is getting so much worse. ARC works with Syrians inside Syria in places like Aleppo and Homs. We help families find shelter, get clean water, and we provide other critical services. We continue to remember the challenging environments in which our colleagues work each day. Kapoeta East in South Sudan is such a place – large, remote and lacking in critical health services. That is, until our team partnered with Health Pooled Fund in support of the re-opening and construction of seven health facilities. Providing service to nearly 114,500 people, these facilities are the channel to life saving care that many need. Families no longer have to travel a distance for quality healthcare. Instead, they are able to seek and find such care in their own community. In honor of World Humanitarian Day, our team in South Sudan was recognized for the strides they’ve made in service to the people of Kapoeta.  ARC teams in South Sudan celebrate World Humanitarian Day  + Flour Mills Cooperative in Rwanda  + For a refugee in Rwanda, food insecurity can mean not having enough food and poor nutrition. But it can also even lead to violence against women. Refugees in the camps receive food rations that often come in the form of raw food which must be ground at a mill outside of the camp in order to be used in cooking. For many, cost and distance from the camp can make this step prohibitive. It can mean that a young girl is returning alone to the camp late at night, or that a man must sell a portion of his food ration to pay for the service of using the mill. In Mugombwa, Kiziba and Mahama refugee camps, ARC’s new Flour Mills Cooperative project seeks to eliminate these challenges by bringing the solution to the refugees. The construction of grinding mills within camp limits has brought greater food security, enhanced nutrition education, protection and income generation. + Changemaker Award + The Changemaker Award celebrates the unlimited potential and amazing insights of our staff around the world. We ask all ARC staff one question:  In one simple way how would you make the people we serve feel more valued, joyful or powerful? ARC staff sent in 481 ideas from around the world. Today we’re starting to count down the Top Ten ideas with this idea from Qasir in Pakistan! Qasir, a Program Associate in Pakistan, submitted his idea about gathering young girls with industry leaders to debate why investing in girls is a great idea for every industry. We appreciate your questions and feedback, so please feel free to send them our way!  Thank you for your continuing support.  -Daniel Daniel Wordsworth, President ***********************************************  + Justice for Refugees + In Uganda, some survivors of sexual and domestic violence have been waiting months – even up to a year – for justice and some small degree of closure. A huge backlog of cases has prevented these refugee women from having their day in court. And even those who did get a court date often were forced to postpone either because they had no transportation to the city from Nakivale refugee settlement where they live or they had no one to translate for them during proceedings. ARC’s team in Uganda came up with the longshot idea to bring the judges to the survivors, and they rallied to actually make this creative solution a reality. They invited district judges and magistrates to the refugee settlement, and over the course of a 12 day judicial process 80+ cases were heard. This was the first time that any judge had come to Nakivale settlement to provide resolution for both survivors and defendants. + Maker's Collection Warehouse Sale + We are making way for our 2015 Maker’s Collection to launch on November 14th! We appreciate your questions and feedback, so please feel free to send them our way!  Thank you for your continuing support.  -Daniel Daniel Wordsworth, President ***********************************************  + Milestone for Kapoeta Civil Hospital + One year ago, American Refugee Committee began working in Kapoeta Civil Hospital in South Sudan. Over this time, our team has worked to increase provision of obstetrics and newborn care services. Thanks to the dedication of the hospital staff, expectant mothers in this community are experiencing healthy labor. In 12 months, we haven't lost a single mother in childbirth!   + Asili Update + Asili, our social enterprise in Eastern Congo, is expanding! We launched the first zone in July 2014 and we’ve now begun work on the second clinic site. Located in Cirunga, the second clinic will be about a 30 minute drive from the first clinic. We are so grateful to Minneapolis-based design firm, RSP Architects, for generously contributing their time and expertise to design the new clinic. You can check out the design below! Similar to the first zone in Buhanga, the Asili zone in Cirunga will also serve a community of roughly 10,000 people with high-quality health care, clean water and agricultural cooperative services.       + 2015 Changemakers Idea Competition + We are in the midst of the 3rd annual Changemakers Award competition! We’ve asked our staff around the world to share their ideas in answer to this question:  “In one simple way, how would you make the people we serve feel more valued, joyful or powerful?” We saw some great ideas in last year’s competition – coding schools for refugees, a recreation and laughter therapy program for elderly and driving school for refugees– and we are anticipating even more this year. The competition is open through July 31st and we’ve already had more than 100 ideas submitted! We appreciate your questions and feedback, so please feel free to send them our way!  Thank you for your continuing support.  -Daniel Daniel Wordsworth, President ***********************************************  + Cut It Out Project in Nu Po + In Nu Po refugee camp, the Cut It Out project has taken life as an initiative that trains female hairdressers to identify and direct victims of intimate partner violence to help. It provides a new pathway for victims of domestic violence to access support. Implemented in May, this project takes advantage of the unique position of hairdressers to recognize signs and symptoms of abuse due to the nature of their service. + VIDEO: Mahama Camp + As of right now, nearly 40,000 refugees have arrived in Rwanda from Burundi. Over the last two months, ARC has led the construction of Mahama Refugee Camp, a new home for refugees fleeing political turmoil. The team is currently building thousands of shelters and community structures to help protect newly arrived families. The team is also hard at work at the camp's hospital and nutrition center, helping hundreds of new moms and children, many of whom suffer from malnutrition after their long journey. Doctors and nurses at the hospital are seeing over 200 patients a day. The ARC team is working long days and nights, putting in hours and hours to make sure we do everything we can to help the new families of Mahama Refugee Camp. They check up on our financials, but we also have a unique partnership; they’ve flown to ARC country programs in Somalia, Sudan, South Sudan, Liberia, Rwanda, and more. They understand our work. “We love working with GRF because they are consummate professionals who believe in really getting to know what we do. They are hands-on and, when necessary, ready to dig into the details while keeping in mind the big picture and our mission,” says Tharangi, ARC’s Finance Controller. “They are never intimidated to visit even our most challenging locations.” GRF auditors know our programs inside and out and look forward to visiting ARC staff in different country programs each audit season. One veteran GRF auditor fondly recalled her experience conducting an audit for ARC while living in a tent. “One of my favorite experiences was living in the tent city in Fishtown, Liberia while ARC was setting up the ETU (Ebola Treatment Center) there,” explained the GRF auditor. In just a few short weeks, the team has gotten this camp up and running and serving thousands of families. Just a bare patch of ground a month ago, Mahama Camp is now sheltering more than 20,000 people! See how the camp is shaping up... + And The Winner Is... + Yasir Ilyas, ARC’s Senior Monitoring and Evaluation Officer in Pakistan, has won ARC’s staff photo contest for the second year running! His photo raises awareness about the adverse psychosocial impact of corporal punishment on primary school students in Pakistan. This year, 4 of the top 5 contest photos were taken by ARC’s Pakistan team. In an act of good sportsmanship and solidarity with their worldwide colleagues, Yasir and the Pakistan team have unanimously decided to dedicate both the honor and prize (a new camera!) to their dear colleague in Rwanda and other Top 5-finisher, Betty Umugiraneza. Thank you for your continuing support.  -Daniel Daniel Wordsworth, President ***********************************************  + Burundian Refugees Arrive in Rwanda + With political uncertainty tied to the upcoming June elections, more than 40,0000 Burundians have fled their homeland for safe haven in Rwanda, Tanzania and DRC (see BBC article on the situation in Burundi: http://www.bbc.com/news/business-32618391).  ARC’s Rwanda team has been working tirelessly to build a refugee camp to offer shelter to the nearly 20,000 Burundians who have arrived in Rwanda seeking stability and safety. Mahama Camp is located in eastern Rwanda on land allocated by the Rwandan government. Working alongside Rwandans from the local community, the ARC team has focused on putting up family tent shelters, community kitchens and other structures to shelter and provide for those in the camp. Our health team is on the ground in Mahama Camp providing health care to the families arriving. A few days ago, our team helped to safely deliver the first baby born at Mahama –little Miss Iradukunda Diella (below). Stay tuned for more updates on this developing crisis. + 2nd Annual ARC Staff Photo Contest + We are excited to have launched our second annual ARC Staff Photo Contest!
