It's always great to hear from you. -Daniel Daniel Wordsworth, President ***********************************************  *UN Flags Risk of Famine in South Sudan*   The UN has warned that in the coming months South Sudan may face the worst starvation since the 1980s, estimating that 3.7 million people are at risk. Since December, violence in the country has killed thousands, more than 1 million have fled their homes, and many farmers have been unable to plant. If emergency aid from the international community doesn’t materialize and fighting prevents farmers from planting a crop before the rains come in late May, famine could devastate the world’s newest country. ARC’s team in South Sudan is operating at full capacity and is ready to respond to help in whatever way we’re needed. *Atomic Challenge - We Did It!* Thanks to support from 483 donors and dozens of others who spread the word, we reached the challenge set by Atomic Data to raise $50,000. Now Atomic will match that amount – which means a total of an additional $100,000 for the children and families we serve around the world. Incredible! We love hearing from you. -Daniel Daniel Wordsworth, President ***********************************************  *Jobs for Somali Youth*   ARC is incredibly excited to be working with hundreds of businesses in Somalia to match young people with opportunities – unemployment in the country stands at 66%. After a thorough market analysis, ARC has developed, in partnership with Somali businesses, a training curriculum and job placement program for young people. Interest from the private sector and young Somalis has surpassed our expectations. 460 youth have already signed on to date, and we’re actively seeking funding to meet additional demand. We could easily grow the program 5-fold and still not meet the need. Trainees learn technical skills in high demand locally, in addition to developing skills in entrepreneurship, communications and problem-solving. Upon completing the rigorous program, youth will be placed in jobs with local companies.  Check out a photo of the Carpentry & Joinery trainees learning how to use different tools and machinery:  http://on.fb.me/1mjk11l *Staff Return to South Sudan* All of ARC’s South Sudan staff have now returned to the country. Earlier this year we had evacuated several team members to neighboring Uganda due to violence. Now, our program sites are all working at 100%. Staff at our head office in Juba must still observe curfew limitations, but otherwise things are operating normally. Having our staff back at full strength is critical. Since the conflict in South Sudan began in December, the humanitarian crisis has become increasingly desperate. 900,000 people have been forced from their homes. 4.9 million people are in need of assistance. The team in South Sudan is providing lifesaving support to people who’ve remained in the country, while our team in Uganda is assisting those who fled South Sudan as refugees.  *An 'Atomic' Challenge* Until March 31, Atomic Data is matching all donations made to the American Refugee Committee – up to $50,000! An 'Atomic' Challenge

Helping refugee children has been of critical importance to Jim ever since. And that’s why Atomic Data is offering this rare corporate challenge grant. If you’d like to give, go to: www.ARCrelief.org/atomicchallenge *Before & After: Kalma Clinic* We recently constructed and opened a brand-new emergency medical center in Kalma Camp in South Darfur, Sudan. The clinic will provide families with access to prenatal care for pregnant mothers, immunizations for kids, and other vital, lifesaving care. Checkout the before and after images of the medical center here: http://on.fb.me/1dshdcU *New Refugee Camp in Rwanda* ARC recently received the first convoy of refugees at the new Mugombwa Refugee Camp in Rwanda. 79 families arrived along with 350 individuals – all originally from the Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC). They had all been living at Nkamira Transit Center, which is only meant to be a temporary stop for refugees and had been pushed well beyond capacity. The ARC team is excited to work together with the new residents of Mugombwa to make the camp a peaceful and supportive temporary home for them until the situation in DRC improves. More families are slated to arrive from Nkamira in the coming weeks. Below is a photo of some of our team in Yangon at the ARC office. The team is working to address drug-resistant malaria in southeast Myanmar. We are working closely with Karen and Mon health organizations and the Ministry of Health to diagnose and provide treatment to more than 165,000 people in 199 villages and border crossing zones. Inside ARC - 1.23.14 - Ceasefire In South Sudan

Hi jay, I have some breaking news you might not have heard. In the last hour, a ceasefire has been signed in South Sudan by government and rebel forces. This week's update is dedicated to the emergency situation in South Sudan. In the next update, we'll return with updates from other ARC programs around the world. Let us know if you have any questions. -Daniel Daniel Wordsworth, President ***********************************************  *Conflict in South Sudan*   NEWS UPDATE: After a month of violence, South Sudan’s government and rebel forces have just signed a ceasefire. Throughout the region and around the world people are hoping this agreement puts a lasting end to the violence. The Violence The crisis began as a political dispute between South Sudanese President Salva Kiir and his former deputy Riek Machar. It quickly spun out of control and escalated into a full-scale conflict devastating much of the world’s newest country. Ethnic killings and other atrocities have been reported. At least 1,000 people have died since the middle of December, and some sources suggest that number is nearer to 10,000. The People Since violence began, more than 500,000 people have fled their homes. Many traveled to safer areas of the country while nearly 100,000 have crossed international borders as refugees (most to neighboring Uganda). It’s estimated that due to insecurity humanitarian organizations have so far been able to reach less than half of those in need of assistance as a result of the conflict. As violence tends to do, families have been split up by the fighting. Children have lost their parents, separated as they’ve fled the violence. Some children have arrived at refugee camps unaccompanied, while other children have been forcibly recruited to fight. ARC Responding In Sudan: Early this week, ARC began returning members of our international staff to Juba, South Sudan’s capital. At the height of the violence, we were forced to evacuate our international staff from Juba.  However our field offices were able to continue providing communities with critical services, although at a diminished capacity. With our international staff back in the country, we are returning to full strength by replenishing our field offices with relief supplies, lifesaving medicines and more. Our team is collaborating with partner organizations to help people inside South Sudan who’ve been affected by the violence. In Uganda: Meanwhile, our team is also mobilizing to help South Sudanese who fled to Uganda – particularly vulnerable groups like children separated from their parents and female-headed households. South Sudanese refugees are likely to stay in Uganda for at least several weeks until they are convinced it is safe to return home. They need shelter, emergency food rations and medicine, counseling to begin to process what they’ve experienced, and protection to prevent any further violence against women and children.
