We couldn’t agree more. The American Refugee Committee salutes our own Ebola Response Team and all of the aid and health workers from our colleague organizations who’ve been on the ground fighting Ebola since the very beginning of the outbreak. They put themselves in harm’s way in order to provide relief to people infected with the virus. They ran the risk of being infected themselves so that they could provide patients with world-class care and stop the epidemic in its tracks! I'm humbled by their sacrifice and heroism. *"Teach a man to fish,...* …and you feed him for a lifetime.” – so the proverb goes. Alongside the Fisheries Ministry, our staff in Somalia are training young men in Kismayo in southern Somalia to become fishermen. Participants undergo a three week course in fishing tackle and skills training. On completing the course, groups of 8 fishermen receive a simple boat and fishing equipment they can use to immediately start up a fishing business to support themselves and their families. The men participating in the program are mostly youth under the age of 30 – many of them have recently returned to Somalia from living abroad as refugees in Kenya’s Dadaab Refugee Camp or elsewhere. Before the twenty year conflict in Somalia, the port of Kismayo had a healthy fishing industry. Our team in Somalia looks forward to training more youth to be fishermen and helping revive the industry, as a whole. Thank You on #GivingTuesday!

Hello jay! It’s Giving Tuesday in the United States - the perfect opportunity for us to give thanks to you for being a part of the American Refugee Committee community. As a supporter, you help make so much possible. So, today, I want to give you an idea of just what you’ve made happen over the past year: Ebola Response – ARC’s team is on the ground, about to take over an Ebola Treatment Unit in eastern Liberia. We’re providing lifesaving treatment to stop the devastation Ebola has caused so many families. Darfur Doubled – We expanded and now help well over 700,000 people with clean water, health care, and other lifesaving services in this region of Sudan. Zero Transmission – We have stopped the transmission of HIV from mother to child in Gihembe and Nyabiheke refugee camps in Rwanda.  Myanmar Program – We launched in eastern Myanmar helping communities fight drug-resistant malaria.  And Opened Asili – In pursuit of new approaches to humanitarian relief, we designed and launched a new social enterprise zone for families of modest means in DRC. For a few dollars, they can get clean water, see a doctor or purchase medicines – our hope is that we’ve created a platform for families to access essential services long after organizations like ARC have left.  That’s the tip of the iceberg. Inside ARC - 11.25.14 - Ebola

If you have any questions, the invitation to contact us is open as always. -Daniel Daniel Wordsworth, President ***********************************************  *2014 WEST AFRICAN EBOLA OUTBREAK* -The Outbreak-   The Ebola epidemic in West Africa is an extraordinary event of international concern, the largest outbreak of the disease in history. 5,458 lives have been lost to the virus in West Africa. It’s a terrible story of fear, loss, pain and anguish for families living in countries like Guinea, Sierra Leone and Liberia. Public health experts are agreed that the best way to protect families in West Africa and the rest of the world from the future spread of the virus is to fight Ebola at its source in West Africa.   -ARC's Response- The American Refugee Committee was requested by the U.S. government to respond and help people affected by this outbreak of Ebola in Africa. Starting in December, ARC will be managing a new Ebola Treatment Unit (ETU) in Fish Town, Liberia. The goal is to get at least 70% of people who’ve been infected through the doors of the ETU, quarantined and aggressively treated in our 60-bed facility. Ebola infections in that region have been relatively few thus far – so success means stopping the virus from ever taking hold in and around Fish Town. This is a key position for preventing the spread of Ebola to neighboring Ivory Coast. ARC is working in close coalition with communities of Liberian Americans and the University of Minnesota’s School of Nursing and School of Public Health to organize our response effort. Our team includes medical professionals with years of experience working with infectious diseases and/or with connections to the health community in Liberia. On Thursday, 11 members departed from ARC’s Headquarters to Monrovia, Liberia for intensive training in Ebola care and Ebola treatment unit protocols. Upon completing the training, the team will head to Fish Town where they will be joined by a team of Liberian healthcare workers and support staff. At full capacity, 200 people are required to safely and effectively operate the ETU. In an abundance of caution, we have put in place rigorous protocols for treatment and care as well as strict rules and practices for team members returning home from Ebola-affected regions. When health workers return to the United States, they enter an immediate and mandatory home quarantine period. ARC makes arrangements for the delivery of all food and necessities during this 21-day period and twice daily monitors the temperature and health of the team member. Feel free to get in touch if you ever have any questions about these items or anything else. -Daniel Daniel Wordsworth, President ***********************************************  *Winner of the 2nd Annual Changemakers Award*   The Changemaker’s Award is an ideas competition whose goal is to generate new and fresh ideas from our 1,000+ staff members around the world.  This year we asked them:  In one simple way, how would you make the people we serve feel more valued, joyful or powerful? 226 staff submitted amazing ideas, including: timebanking, recreation for the elderly in refugee camps, and emergency preparedness drills for schools in Pakistan. I could not be more proud to work with such amazing, creative, hardworking individuals. You can see the full list of our top ten finalists here: www.arcrelief.org/Changemakers2014 . This year’s winning idea is…Coding Schools for Refugees where refugee youth can learn to program and design for web technologies! It was submitted by: Aniqa Maqbool, Junaid Ali Tariq, Sohail Ahmed, Erum Aziz, Muhammad Imran, Cleopas Sikuwabo Mudahemuka, Frederic Auger and Ashish Gadnis! The concept is future oriented. It brings relevant technology to the hands of refugees, giving them wide-reaching opportunities far beyond the places where they live. We’re proud to honor the changemakers that submitted this winning idea!  *Mother to Child Transmission of HIV Eliminated* ARC’s Health team in Rwanda has achieved a significant, life-changing milestone. In Gihembe and Nyabiheke refugee camps in Rwanda, mother-to-child transmission of HIV has been eliminated. No infants born to HIV-positive mothers in either camp have tested positive for HIV at 18 months. This achievement comes three years in advance of UNAIDS’ global plan for ending new HIV infections among children. Well-trained clinical staff that closely adhere to national PMTCT protocols, strong supply chain management, and effective community outreach and patient tracing are responsible for the success. Inside ARC - 10.3.14 - Myanmar, Darfur x2, A Launch

You can always feel free to get in touch if you ever have any questions about these items or anything else. -Daniel Daniel Wordsworth, President ***********************************************  *Asili Launch*   Asili – ARC’s social enterprise platform for child survival and maternal health in Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC) – celebrated its grand opening last week in Buhanga. More than 700 community members attended, including the Governor of South Kivu Province and the tribal King of the Kabare district. The Honorable James Swan (US Ambassador to DRC), USAID Assistant Administrator for Africa Earl Gast and other dignitaries were also in attendance for launch events. A disruptive start-up business - Asili provides basic health care, clean water, and agricultural support to a community of more than 10,000 people.  Early input from the community has been exceptionally positive. Both health and agriculture are ahead of projections, and clean water services came online two weeks ago. *Myanmar Training Completed* A few weeks ago, ARC completed training of dozens of volunteer community health workers in Myanmar to screen rural communities for drug-resistant malaria and help treat patients who've been infected. These volunteers are students, farmers and other members of the community without medical backgrounds. They allow us to cast a wide net, covering a much larger geographic area than we otherwise could. The volunteers will monitor patients' courses of treatment using boats, bicycles and going by foot to extremely remote areas of the country. ARC is working closely with indigenous health partners, including the Karen Department of Health and Welfare and the Mon National Health Committee, to implement this program. We're also partnering with the Myanmar Ministry of Health to put laboratory workers from indigenous health clinics through a one-month training to strengthen their malaria microscopy skills. We'll supply the facilities with 10 new microscopes to aid in screening for new cases of drug-resistant malaria. *Darfur Relief Efforts Double* ARC's relief efforts in Darfur have recently doubled. We are now the largest international relief organization in this region of Sudan. Since 2003, ARC has served people in South Darfur living either in displaced person camps or in rural villages. In recognition of ten years of exemplary service in South Darfur, ARC was asked to take over relief efforts in East Darfur operated by a departing agency. In East Darfur, ARC runs a hospital and provides other relief services similar to those in the south. Inside ARC - 8.28.14 - Cholera in South Sudan, Famine, Changemakers

If you ever have any questions about these items or anything else, please always feel free to reach out to us. -Daniel Daniel Wordsworth, President ***********************************************  *Cholera Outbreak in South Sudan*   At the request of the International Organization for Migration (IOM), ARC has deployed a team of 16 international experts to respond to an outbreak of cholera in South Sudan. Nearly 6,000 South Sudanese have been infected with cholera since March – 123 have lost their lives. With support from IOM, ARC’s team of water, sanitation and health experts are deploying to South Sudan’s Eastern and Western Equatoria counties. They will test water for contamination, rehabilitate water systems, relocate or close contaminated latrines and train health workers and community hygiene promoters to share strategies with the public about how to prevent cholera infection. We’re also setting up oral rehydration points where people can access rehydration salts, and we’re prepositioning supplies throughout the region to quickly erect fully operative cholera treatment centers – in the event of a full-blown epidemic. *Famine Monitoring* South Sudan and Somalia are currently experiencing serious food insecurity conditions. In South Sudan, violence has prevented many farmers from planting their crops. As a result, the eastern half of the country is experiencing crisis and emergency-level food insecurity (one degree removed from famine). In Somalia, nearly 1 million people are experiencing food crisis, thanks to intensified conflict, restricted trade and a poor harvest. In both countries, conditions are expected to deteriorate over the coming weeks and months. ARC operates programs in both places and is monitoring the situations closely. We’re there to help people in any way we can, and we’re poised to mobilize a major response if called on to do so. *Changemaker's Idea Competition* Last week, we launched the 2nd Annual Changemaker’s Competition. It’s an idea competition that asks ARC staff worldwide – “in one simple way, how would you make the people we serve feel more valued, joyful or powerful?” Big or small, we’re looking for fresh, positive ideas that could possibly be replicated across all of ARC’s programs around the world. Last year, more than 100 ideas were submitted – the top ten included a refugee camp bicycle sharing scheme, an e-learning academy for women, and biomass briquette presses to convert refugee camp garbage into fuel.
