As always, please let us know if you have questions. -Daniel Daniel Wordsworth, President *********************************************** *Today is World Refugee Day* World Refugee Day falls every year on June 20th. This year, the day comes with some discouraging news: in 2012, more people became refugees or internally displaced people than at any time since 1994, according to the United Nations. World Refugee Day is a day to raise awareness of the situation of refugees around the world. I want to thank you for taking time out of your life to pause and consider the experience of refugees AND for being part of a global network of support for people who’ve lost so much.
Youth unemployment is 67 percent in Somalia, and the vast majority of young people have been denied an education as a result of the last twenty years of conflict. ARC is delighted to announce a partnership with Dahabshiil, the largest international payments firm in Africa, and Silatech, the largest provider of youth-focused microenterprise services in the Middle East and North Africa, to promote youth enterprise development and provide employment solutions in the Somali territories.
In March, ARC’s Rwanda team launched a tree planting initiative. Through the project, the team will plant 30,000 seedlings in Kiziba Camp. They’ll also share seedlings with the community surrounding the camp, showing neighbors how to plant and care for the trees. According to Edith Mukandayisenga, ARC Rwanda’s Environment and Hygiene Coordinator, “We… refugees … really know the importance of trees, like giving rain, fresh air, and preventing landslides. That’s why we will do our best to teach our neighbors how tree planting is very important in our daily life."
